Senior Backend Engineer – Distributed Systems, Applied AI, and Engineering Platforms
United States
Oracle
Oracle offers a comprehensive and fully integrated stack of cloud applications and cloud platform services.Who are we?
We’re a team of engineers, architects, and innovators solving large-scale distributed systems challenges at the heart of Oracle’s SaaS infrastructure. Our mission is to empower developers and operators across SaaS and Fusion Applications to observe, troubleshoot, and optimize services with speed, confidence, and intelligence.
We’ve already built a modern observability platform that goes far beyond monitoring—supporting global scale, rich telemetry (metrics, logs, traces), and fast, real-time querying. We handle billions of telemetry signals daily from millions of compute nodes worldwide, using lightweight agents and edge components that run deep in the stack. Our systems build on technologies from the open source ecosystem—including OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and others—and are extended through internal innovation to meet Oracle’s unique scale and complexity.
Now, we’re pushing into areas like intelligent telemetry analysis, continuous profiling (using eBPF), cost-aware data processing, distributed lakehouses with federated search, and a unified view of infrastructure, application, and client behavior.
Our platform is built on a Kubernetes-native, cloud-first foundation and constantly evolves to meet the demands of our global services.
What makes this role unique
The work
- Combine engineering, research, and operations to build systems that span telemetry pipelines, developer tooling, and edge data collection
- Take end-to-end ownership of critical components and shape how engineers interact with telemetry at global scale
The impact
- Help evolve a platform used by thousands of SaaS engineers, with tight feedback loops and real customer context
- Contribute to the next chapter in observability—more intelligent, more unified, and more scalable than anything out there today
Level Flexibility
While this role is scoped at the IC4+ level, we are open to strong candidates at other levels (from IC2 to IC6) depending on experience and fit. If you’re excited about the mission but unsure if you meet all listed criteria, we encourage you to apply.
What we’re looking for
- Strong background in building distributed systems, with experience designing and maintaining reliable, scalable backend services
- Proficiency in one or more systems-oriented languages such as Golang, Java, or Rust — our team primarily uses Golang
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes-native environments and cloud infrastructure (OCI, AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Experience solving complex engineering problems in areas like performance, scalability, reliability, data handling, or developer experience
- A strong sense of product quality and empathy for engineers who depend on our platform
- Proven ability to lead design efforts, write clear technical specs, and mentor other engineers
- Comfortable owning systems end-to-end — including architecture, delivery, and operations
Bonus skills
- Exposure to AI/ML in production systems, especially for observability or infrastructure use cases
- Experience working with large-scale, high-throughput, or globally distributed backend systems
- Experience contributing to open source projects, or working with a hybrid of OSS and internal stacks
- Familiarity with observability or SRE domains, either as a user of telemetry platforms or as a builder of monitoring solutions
What you’ll do
- Design and build backend systems that power telemetry collection, analysis, and developer-facing tools
- Drive architectural efforts to improve scale, performance, cost-efficiency, and operational simplicity
- Collaborate across our global observability team and with thousands of SaaS engineers who depend on our platform
- Take ownership of services—from architecture and implementation to production operation and long-term evolution
- Grow into a subject matter expert in key areas of the platform
- Participate in a global on-call rotation as part of shared responsibility for the systems we run
How we work
We are a remote-friendly team, with many members working from home across multiple time zones. We are globally distributed, with most of our team located in the U.S. and India, and we collaborate with SaaS engineers around the world. We value clear communication, async-friendly workflows, and a culture of trust and ownership.
