JOB SUMMARY:

The Data Analyst II is a strategic partner in leveraging data to improve clinical quality, operational performance, work force development and health outcomes at the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC). This mid-level role involves the design and execution of advanced analyses, the development of dynamic data tools, and the integration of geospatial insights to inform decision-making and community impact.

This position involves regular work with Protected Health Information (PHI) and requires deep understanding of HIPAA compliance and healthcare data governance.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the design and automation of interactive dashboards and reporting tools to support performance improvement, compliance (e.g., UDS, HEDIS), and strategic initiatives.
  • Perform advanced data analysis, including multivariate analyses, cohort tracking, population health stratification, and forecasting.
  • Collaborate with clinical leadership, residency program staff, and administrative teams to define KPIs and data needs aligned with organizational goals.
  • Use SQL, R, or Python to create data pipelines and automate routine reporting tasks.
  • Integrate and analyze data from diverse systems, including EHR, enterprise resource planning systems, and community-based data sources.
  • Apply GIS (Geographic Information Systems) tools to map patient demographics, health outcomes, and service areas to support place-based strategies and community outreach.
  • Ensure data quality assurance by identifying inconsistencies, resolving discrepancies, and documenting data definitions and business rules.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of clinical programs, including medical education, mobile health, and chronic disease interventions.
  • Support data governance initiatives, including metadata documentation, data access controls, and user training.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior analysts and interns.
  • Translate complex data findings into accessible presentations for non-technical audiences, including executive leadership, community partners, and funders.

SPECIFIED SKILLS

  • Advanced SQL skills and experience with R or Python for data cleaning, transformation, and analysis.
  • Proficiency in Tableau, Power BI, Qlik (preferred) or similar platforms for interactive dashboard development.
  • Experience with EHR data extraction and reporting
  • Proficiency in GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial data analysis.
  • Strong grasp of healthcare metrics (UDS, HEDIS, PCMH, quality improvement frameworks).
  • Ability to perform multivariate statistical analyses and communicate meaningful insights.
  • Ability to tailor visualizations and findings for clinical, administrative, and community-based audiences.
  • Skilled in translating data into stories and action plans that advance health equity and access.
  • Deep understanding of HIPAA, data privacy standards, and ethical data use in a clinical environment.
  • Project management skills and the ability to lead multiple data projects independently.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure and/ or other cloud-computing environments preferred
  • Experience using DevOps/ Agile applications and frameworks preferred, but not required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position requires sitting frequently.  Must be able to use a computer to input and review results of work on a typical computer monitor

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May provide mentorship to Data Analyst I team members, interns, or data fellows.
  • Responsible for training new staff or interns on data tools, workflows, and standards.
  • May lead small project teams or working groups related to data initiatives (e.g., dashboard development, data quality improvement).
  • This role is expected to model best practices, promote data literacy across teams, and serve as a resource for all staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Informatics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field required.
  • Master’s degree preferred in a related field (e.g., MPH, MS in Health Informatics, MPA with data focus).
  • 2–4 years of professional experience in healthcare or public health analytics.
  • Experience working with EHRs and healthcare quality metrics (e.g., eCQM, UDS, HEDIS, PCMH, HRSA reporting).
  • Demonstrated experience with GIS tools in a healthcare or community context is highly valued.

SCHEDULE:

Regular attendance on-site is an essential function of this position. Typical business hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (or flexed to best meet the needs of the clients and/or the Division); 40 hours per workweek; weekend, holiday, or evening coverage is occasionally required. Work hours will need to be flexible in order to respond to special work assignments, or evening activities, as requested by the team leader.

POSITION COMPENSATION:

$67,500, full time + full benefits
