We have an open position for a Machine Learning Research Intern to join our team in Silicon Valley for Summer 2024 (with potential to extend to the Fall semester). Our team is growing, and we are excited to evaluate candidates with potential to convert to full-time Research Scientist/Data Scientist positions.

Nissan Advanced Technology Center Silicon Valley (NATC-SV, located in Santa Clara, CA) is looking for self-motivated students who want to challenge themselves, test their skills, develop their talents, and discover their full potential. The Nissan Internship Program is an integral component and the first step of our commitment to our employees' long- term personal and professional development.

NATC-SV works at the cutting edge of transportation technology, helping define the future of mobility. We are researchers, scientists, engineers, and makers that collaborate with world class technical groups and leadership in Japan, Europe, North America, and beyond.

Vehicle Grid Integration (VGI) is about connecting electric vehicles (EVs) to the electricity grid, to make energy available at all times and to maximize utilization of renewable energy. The VGI team brings together machine learning researchers, data scientists, operations researchers, engineers, and business leaders to develop intelligent and sustainable systems that manage EV services and infrastructure. We work with VGI services and the next generation of services for energy resiliency, CO2 reduction, electricity saving.

Potential Internship Projects:

  • Model and predict EV usage behavior (driving, charging patterns) of customers,
  • Optimize EV usage profile (driving/charging load pattern) to provide value to stakeholders, (Electricity cost reduction, battery life extension, grid load reduction and so on)
  • Provide insights for personalized EV usage recommendation.

During your internship, you will have the chance to work on real world data collected from vehicles on road in different regions.

Key Responsibilities / Daily Expectations:

  • Working fast with Python and SQL – interns will be expected to contribute to model development, training, testing, documentation, and production. Real-world data can be noisy, constrained, and poorly structured; comfort with the basic tools of the trade will go a long way and maximize your impact on model development.
  • Collaborate with research scientists, engineers, managers, and stakeholders to develop data-driven machine learning, planning, and optimization models for relevant exploratory and customer-facing applications,
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to understand customer behaviors and trends. Leverage relevant insights to drive model development,
  • Analyze, document, summarize, and communicate research findings in a clear and effective manner. Interns are highly encouraged to pursue patents, academic papers, and other relevant intellectual property stemming from their work.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:

  • Pursuing PhD degree in computer science, statistics, engineering, operations research, or related technical field. Exceptional candidates in research-focused MS programs will be considered.
  • Advanced research artifacts in the form of sound and creative scientific papers (e.g. NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, AAAI, IJCAI, etc.), and/or open-source code repositories on related topics,
  • Fluency in Python, including proficiency with data structures & advanced algorithms,
  • Hands on experience with machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow, JAX, and/or PyTorch, and packages for data science including pandas, scikit-learn, and SciPy,
  • Experience with advanced machine learning and statistical methods (e.g. Temporal Fusion Transformers, NBEATS), with intuition for when to use linear regression instead,
  • Attention to detail, flexibility, creativity, and excellent communication and teamwork skills,
  • A strong passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data,
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skill.

Preferred Skills (not required):

  • Understanding of reinforcement learning and search algorithms (e.g. MCTS, AlphaZero, etc.)
  • Familiarity with energy management system research (VGI, solar, HEMS, BEMS, and so on)
