Business Unit Overview

This position is part of Novanta’s Corporate and Shared Services global teams.  Novanta’s Corporate and Shared Services teams play an important role in executing the company’s strategic mission and operations. Included in Corporate and Shared Services are the business functions including Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal, Compliance, Corporate Development and Corporate Marketing.  The Corporate and Shared Services teams work closely with all Novanta business units to support operating initiatives contributing to the organization’s financial success.

Position Details

Summary

Novanta is seeking an experienced Data Governance & Privacy Specialist to help develop and enhance our privacy and data protection capabilities including sensitive information policies and practices. You will contribute to internal information security and privacy audits, assess existing processes, and provide strategic recommendations to fortify data protection measures.

The ideal candidate will have experience navigating global privacy regulations in a global manufacturing setting. Further, candidates should have experience operationalizing data governance and privacy policies. Exceptional organizational, communication, and project management skills are crucial for enhancing Novanta’s data protection capabilities. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Governance Risk, and Compliance, this position requires consistent collaboration with Novanta's legal, IT, and business teams to ensure a unified approach to privacy and compliance.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Data Governance Framework: Assist in selecting and implementing a data governance framework aligned with organizational goals.
  • Policy and Procedure Development: Draft and maintain data governance policies and procedures, ensuring they meet regulatory requirements.
  • Data Discovery: Conduct data discovery exercises to identify and classify different data assets processed and stored across the organization. Experience with data classification tools and technologies is desired.
  • Privacy Compliance: Ensure data privacy requirements are integrated into all data governance activities.
  • Privacy Assessments: Conduct Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) and Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) for new and existing processes.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Senior Director of GRC and the Senior IT Risk & Compliance Manager to support data governance and privacy initiatives.
  • Training and Awareness: Participate in the development and delivery of training plans to educate staff on data protection principles, fostering a culture of compliance across the organization. Promote a proactive culture of data protection compliance, inspiring teams to prioritize privacy and security at every level.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay current with emerging trends and best practices in data governance and privacy and recommend improvements.
  • Contract Review Experience: Support legal and information security teams in reviewing Master Service Agreements (MSA), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA), Data Processing Agreements (DPA), Data Transfer Agreements, Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC), and responding to data privacy/information security questionnaires.

Required Experience, Education, Skills, Training and Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Security, Data Management, Law, or a related field.
  • 4+ years’ professional experience in the field of data management, governance, or privacy.
  • Professional certification in data privacy, security or governance (e.g., CIPP, CIPM, CDPM, or equivalent).
  • Understanding of data governance principles and frameworks (e.g. ISO/IEC 38505).
  • Familiarity with data privacy regulations such as GDPR and CCPA.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify and classify data assets.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage with stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Proactive and eager to learn, with a strong attention to detail.

Travel Requirements    

  • As needed for projects, estimated at 15%

Physical Requirements

  • Mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer.
  • Ability to use vision to read computer screens and read printed materials
