Position Summary

The Director of Enterprise Data and Information Strategy (EDIS) is responsible for overseeing the strategy, execution, and delivery of technology products that support the business and programmatic needs of the NEA and its affiliates.  This position oversees a diverse team of product specialists, project managers, developers, and quality assurance engineers to manage end-to-end product lifecycle, software development methodologies, and cross-functional collaboration.  The Director reports to the Senior Director of the Center for Innovation and Technology (CIT) and works collaboratively across NEA Centers and state affiliates to ensure the development, delivery, and maintenance of products to support the goals of the union.   

Responsibilities

The Director of EDIS is responsible for providing the vision and strategy for the methodologies, technologies, and overall development of sustainable, scalable, and secure solutions that align with the organization's strategic goals. 

  • Product Strategy & Roadmap
    • Develop and implement a strategic product roadmap aligned with the strategic goals of the organization.
    • Identify opportunities to leverage technology for organizing, advocacy, member service, and operations. 
    • Drive innovation by introducing new features, technologies, and improvements by overseeing the development of tools, apps, platforms, and integrations that enhance the value of the organization for NEA, affiliates, and members. 
  • Team Leadership & Collaboration
    • Lead and oversee cross-functional teams, including development, design, QA, product, and project management.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
    • Provide mentorship, coaching, and professional development opportunities for team members.
    • Foster process improvement and reduce redundancies and inefficiencies
  • Software Development & Agile Execution
    • Ensure efficient execution of Agile and Scrum methodologies and oversee the full software development lifecycle, from concept to launch.
    • Collaborate with development teams to optimize workflows, improve scalability, and enhance software performance.
    • Drive CI/CD best practices to streamline software development workflows, ensuring automated integration, testing, and deployment processes that enhance speed, reliability, and product scalability. 
  • Stakeholder & Executive Engagement
    • Communicate product vision, strategy, and progress to executive leadership and key stakeholders.
    • Work closely with customers and business units to gather insights and refine product offerings.
  • Risk Management & Compliance
    • Identify risks in product development and establish mitigation strategies.
    • Ensure compliance with industry standards, security protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Resource & Budget Allocation
    • Manage budgets and allocate resources to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
    • Oversee hiring, training, and retention strategies for product development teams.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of management experience in product development roles within labor unions, professional associations, or advocacy groups.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading product development strategies, initiatives, and projects.
  • Strong project and product management skills.
  • Experience with initiatives that promoted digital transformation and innovation to advance the business objectives of an organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively and apply problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to align product development strategies with the union’s mission and goals. 
  • Expertise with tools and platforms that enhance communications and member engagement, recruitment and retention activities.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing IT staff, fostering growth and excellence across all levels and functions within a complex IT environment.
  • Experience managing budgets and financial planning.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders and advocate for IT initiatives that support union objectives.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing technology landscapes and a commitment to continuous learning and staying updated with the latest industry trends and best practices.  
  • Experience working in a management role in a unionized staff environment. 
  • Ability to travel frequently (30-45 overnights per year).
