Job Description Summary
The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a partnership between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017. Currently, the School has 36 core and joint faculty located on campus and at healthcare research institutes, over 400 graduate and undergraduate students, more than 20 administrative staff, and several research core service facilities. In 2024/2025, the SBME will move into a new building on campus, which will act as a hub for biomedical engineering activities at UBC and beyond. The School serves as a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation, aspiring to be a global leader in the field. Its vision is to transform health care outcomes through the unconstrained exploration of the best possible integrative solutions across engineering, medicine, and biology.
Dr. Carl de Boer’s laboratory in the Biomedical Research Centre at the University of British Columbia is looking to hire a full-time Research Assistant/Technician to join the team. The primary work for this position will be to create software and analyses in computational biology.
Organizational Status
Reports directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Carl de Boer.
Work Performed
- Implement servers and clients that utilize APIs to benchmark genomics models with evaluation tasks.
- Collect and process genomics data, including MPRA, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, etc.
- Create and process machine learning models.
- Uses models for prediction tasks.
- Uses interpretability frameworks to identify important parts of regulatory DNA sequences.
- Uses compute clusters for running models and model benchmarks, and analyzing data.
- Carries out any other related duties as mutually agreed upon with supervisor keeping with the qualifications and requirements of tasks within this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Decisions made and processed involved in this position may be complex in nature, but the Technician will be managing their own schedule to ensure completion of assigned tasks.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Carl de Boer, specifically for issues that deviate from established procedures.
Supervision Exercised
The incumbent will not be responsible for supervising new members of the team, but may assist with training low classification technicians as well as students, when required to pass on experience in established techniques.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in computational biology and lab environment preferred.
- Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail in all tasks.
- Demonstrates sound judgment, maintaining confidentiality, discretion, and strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Experience coding in Python.
- Knowledge of gene regulation, genomics, and APIs.
