Job Description:

MedTech, a division of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, is recruiting for a Director – R&D Data management and governance role within the MedTech Data and AI  group passionate about building the next-gen data and platform capabilities enabling MedTech Commercial ,R&D, and Supply Chain functions.  This position is based in West Chester, PA.

You will drive forward technology product ownership and capability pull-through for our Data & AI platforms and products for MedTech aligned with the organization's objectives. You will advance data platforms, product & capability roadmap development of multiple new technologies. Additionally, you will partner with the MedTech Domain Leads, Solution Leads, Architects, and domain professionals across functions on data capabilities to enable their design, build, and ongoing sustainment. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a unified data strategy that spans the full R&D lifecycle, integrating Product Development, Pre-Clinical, Clinical, Simulation, Regulatory, and Real-World Data domains.
  • Design and implement tailored data governance frameworks and policies that ensure data quality, compliance, and visibility throughout R&D operations.
  • Establish and lead data stewardship programs, promoting accountability and standard processes for data management across all R&D functions.
  • Supervise the integration and harmonization of data standards, taxonomies, and nomenclature in collaboration with business and technology partners.
  • Champion the adoption of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles and drive continuous improvement in data accessibility and reusability. Advance API-first, digital, and automation solutions to enable secure, real-time data access and interoperability among R&D platforms and applications.
  • Lead the transformation of the R&D data landscape by identifying and implementing innovative digital solutions, including AI, ML, and advanced analytics.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for R&D data governance councils, quality management, and compliance with global regulatory requirements (e.g., UDI, EUDAMED, UKCA, FDA/GUDID).
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of a central data catalog, data lake, and other digital assets to support visibility, decision-making, and regulatory submissions.
  • Drive multi-functional collaboration with IT, scientific, regulatory, and business teams to align data initiatives with organizational objectives and industry standard methodologies.
  • Define end-end data and platform architecture for enabling connected eco-system across MedTech.
  • Enhance return on investment by identifying and prioritizing the product features by business value (building the right thing).
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators for data quality, governance, and operational effectiveness, using insights to drive improvements.
  • Lead and handle data management teams, providing coaching, mentorship, and career development while fostering a high-performance, passionate culture.
  • Ensure inspection readiness and compliance by maintaining robust documentation, audit trails, and risk mitigation strategies for all R&D data assets.
  • Represent R&D Data Management in enterprise-wide initiatives, external partnerships, and industry forums to benchmark practices, share lessons learned, and drive innovation.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to build data literacy and standardization around data governance and management across global R&D teams.
  • Champion open source solutions and Cloud native technologies.
  • Work closely with external partners and system integrators to build joint delivery plans, ensure efficient design, robust execution, and timeliness of outcomes.
  • Think outside of the current technology/stack limitations to push the boundaries on what is possible and deliver feasible solutions for MedTech.
  • Partner across multiple operating segments; supply chain, compliance, Information Security, Compliance etc.  to understand GxP, PII data requirements, technical constraints, and act as a consultant to offer product design & development guidance.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required in a relevant technical or scientific field preferred (e.g., Engineering, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Science).

Experience

  • 10- 15+ years of dynamic experience in R&D, data management, medical device, or related regulated industries.
  • Significant leadership experience, including leading large, multi-functional or global teams (often 5+ years at the management level).
  • Proven expertise in product development, portfolio management, project/program management, and/or business management within MedTech or similar environments.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and standards (e.g., FDA, EUDAMED, UDI, ISO, GMP), and familiarity with global product registration and launch processes.
  • Consistent record in implementing data governance, quality, and stewardship initiatives.
  • Experience with digital transformation, data integration, cloud/data lake environments, and advanced analytics (AI/ML) is highly valued.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks, data quality, and compliance standard methodologies.
  • Advanced understanding of medical device development processes, regulatory pathways, and R&D lifecycle management.
  • Good communication, collaboration, and partner management skills, with the ability to influence and align multi-functional teams.
  • High intuition for business, critical thinking, and the ability to drive organizational change and innovation.
  • Experience leading and delivering programs in the MedTech industry is preferred.
  • Demonstrable understanding of Security, GxP, compliance and regulatory requirements around HIPAA, GDPR and CCPA preferred.
