Job Summary

The Data Analytics and Reporting Analyst / Engineer plays a key role in advancing next-generation analytics and reporting capabilities for Southern Power’s Commercial Optimization, Trading and Transmission (COT&T) organization. As part of the Modeling and Analytics team, this position helps shape and execute strategic data initiatives to drive scalable efficiencies and unlock growth opportunities. Such initiatives include technologies such as AI and machine learning.

This role develops tools, metrics, and processes that support data-driven decision-making across COT&T market and trading teams. It also serves as a cross-functional liaison, coordinating analytical projects and insights with stakeholders in SPC Operations, Project Analysis and Market Assessment, Finance, Accounting, and Technology.

Commercial Optimization, Trading, and Transmission

Commercial Optimization, Trading, and Transmission is comprised of teams that manage approximately 100 Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) with over $1B in annual PPA revenues, participate in wholesale energy trading, engage in market policy, and provide transmission analysis and support. The market teams manage contracts and more than 50 customer relationships for a variety of contract types covering a fleet of natural gas, solar, and wind assets. The trading team is responsible for optimizing wholesale trading of generation for a subset of our wind and gas assets in the national wholesale markets. The data and analytics team is responsible for providing accurate and timely data to support key decision-making as well as internal and external reporting.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required; a degree in finance, accounting, engineering, mathematics, data analytics, or equivalent is strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, Business Intelligence tools (Power BI, Tableau); Experience with database technologies such as SQL (preferred)
  • Proven ability to convert data into actionable reports and communicate effectively with peers and management
  • Experience working with machine learning and/or AI technologies (a plus)
  • Ability to successfully prioritize and manage numerous tasks
  • Experience coordinating projects across multiple organizations including SPC Operations, Project Analysis and Market Assessment, Finance, Accounting, and Technology
  • Knowledge of wholesale power markets such as Southern, CAISO, ERCOT, and SPP (preferred)

Major Responsibilities

  • Advance next-generation data analytics through the development of dashboards and visualizations that improve processes and procedures 
  • Develop new Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for prioritizing actionable recommendations for both market performance
  • Formulate best practices within COT&T to develop and analyze information that assists asset managers with asset optimization
  • Determine optimal solutions for complex issues across various markets, technologies, and contract structures
  • Work closely with the Technology Organization to leverage new and emerging technologies
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, open trading floor environment
