Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections,  where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

As part of the global technical development organization, we are responsible for the research and development of the drug substance solid state as well as oral dosage forms, at the Roche Basel site.

This includes the screening and characterization of all relevant solid forms of the drug substance. While classical solvent based screening techniques identify most solid forms, some relevant forms may remain undiscovered for extended periods. Such crystal forms can surface unexpectedly in later development stages, potentially jeopardizing the entire project (e.g., a much more stable polymorph, a very stable solvate with a process solvent, etc.)

To discover these forms in a structured way, "special" crystallization experiments can provide a solution to the problem by creating alternative and uncommon conditions that support the nucleation of hidden solid forms.

The Opportunity:

You will support Pharmaceutical R & D (Research and Development) in the field of Solid Form Screening. This includes:

  • Testing of non-classical crystallization techniques (supersaturation matrix, heteroseeding, salt break, sublimation, ultrasonic nucleation, vapor diffusion, etc.)

  • Development of simple and repeatable workflows

  • Consolidation of all methods into a screening package

  • Benchmarking them against classical screening techniques with ongoing portfolio projects

Who you are:

You are a student (or recently graduated) preferably in the subject of Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Pharmaceutical Sciences or similar and have a strong interest in experimental science. Furthermore, you are interested in using and sharing your knowledge as part of your Internship in a modern working environment. Your further profile for this position:

  • Reliable and accurate working style in a non-GMP laboratory environment

  • Team-oriented and decision-making personality

  • Self-sufficient, problem solving-oriented work habits

  • Experience in crystallization and/or solid state analytics (X-ray diffraction and thermoanalytical methods) is a plus

  • Proficient in English, German is a plus

This internship opportunity is one of a number of positions we offer in the department per semester and is not suitable for writing a Bachelor/Master/Diploma thesis.

The interviews will take place on an interview day with all considered candidates and the whole department.

Your complete application includes the following documents:

  • A Current CV and a Motivation Letter

  • A certificate of enrollment (if you are currently studying)

  • For Non-EU/EFTA citizens: Due to regulations, you must provide a certificate issued by your university stating that an Internship is mandatory for your studies and you must be enrolled during the entire duration of the internship

  • The RiSM task (see below)

Application Process

The application deadline is 24.08.2025. All successful final candidates will be invited to a virtual interview day which will take place on 15.10.2025.

The Internship will start in 2026 for 6-12 months, please indicate your preferred start date and duration in your application.

RiSM task

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming various aspects of life. Its applications span from ubiquitous uses such as virtual assistants and recommendation systems to complex domains including healthcare and scientific research. Assume that you are writing your own grant application for a 12-months internship that leverages AI within your chosen field of study or in a domain relevant to your academic background. We anticipate receiving your proposal (maximum of 3 slides, PDF format) alongside your application.
