CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Research Assistant 3 explores innovations to research and strives to improve implementation and family outcomes. The Research Assistant 3 ensures compliance with University policies, rules, and regulations to meet federal, state, and local standards pertaining to safety and ethics.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Plans and implements research experiments, according to research protocols, to assure high-quality scientific results in support of applicable project goals.
2. Participates in assessing the feasibility of implementing innovations.
3. Assesses data trends and develops reports and presentations.
4. Supports the initiation of new research by reviewing and synthesizing literature.
5. Oversees inventory of supplies and equipment and places orders in a timely fashion.
6. Assists in the preparation of scientific papers, reports, and manuscripts.
7. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
- Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
Department Specific Functions
- Conduct machine learning-based analysis of long-term atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) data.
- Preprocess, clean, and organize complex environmental time-series datasets collected from DOE-supported observational platforms.
- Develop and validate classification or regression models to identify nucleation events and key atmospheric drivers.
- Summarize findings into figures and technical reports to support peer-reviewed publications and future grant proposals.
- Work closely with the principal investigator and external collaborators to ensure timely completion of deliverables aligned with the analysis of atmospheric data collected at the Bankhead National Forest.
Department Specific Qualifications
Education:
- Doctoral degree in environmental engineering and science, atmospheric science, computer science, or a related quantitative field.
Certification and Licensing:
- Prior experience working with atmospheric aerosol data and/or machine learning tools in Python or MATLAB is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with data products from DOE or ARM datasets.
Experience:

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
- Strong analytical and programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R).
- Understanding of atmospheric chemistry and aerosol formation processes.

- Effective communication skills for interdisciplinary teamwork and scientific writing.
