The Data Engineer Level III – Business Intelligence – Alberta reporting to Information & Reporting manager – Alberta is responsible for designing, developing, implementing and maintaining scalable data solutions leveraging cloud technologies for Data Warehouse and/or Data Lakehouse architectures. The position collaborates across multiple business units to achieve its primary goal of supporting the Information & Reporting team of highly available and accessible data environment to support our clients operational and analytical reporting requirements. Keys aspects of the position are knowledge transfer, training, facilitation, communication, and continuous improvement of service delivery provided by the Business Systems department.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Lead the end-to-end design, development, implementation, and optimization of enterprise data architecture, dimensional data models, data catalogs, and master/reference data strategies to meet diverse stakeholder requirements.
- Champion data governance initiatives by establishing and enforcing robust data security, privacy, and compliance frameworks for cloud-based Data Warehouse/Lakehouse environments.
- Drive strategic planning and execution of lifecycle management for the DW/LH data estate, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to foster data literacy, promote analytics adoption, and enable a data-driven decision-making culture across the organization.
- Provide senior-level technical leadership, mentoring, and hands-on guidance to the Information & Reporting team in adopting modern data engineering methodologies, tools, and best practices.
- Continuously monitor industry trends, innovations, and emerging technologies, offering recommendations for evolving architecture and tooling to meet future business needs.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- IT Certification, Diploma, Degree or equivalent is required.
- 5–7 years of progressive, hands-on experience as a data engineer in the design, development, and support of enterprise-scale data warehouses or lakehouses is required.
- 3–5 years of experience in developing robust data integration workflows, building scalable data platforms, and managing structured and unstructured data pipelines is required.
- Minimum of 2–3 years of project coordination or technical leadership experience in implementing cloud-based data warehouse/lakehouse solutions is required.
- Proven experience working with Azure cloud services, including Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, or Azure Synapse, is a strong asset.
- In-depth experience with lakehouse technologies such as Delta Lake, Databricks, and associated modern data architectures is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Power Apps, and/or Azure Synapse is an asset.
- Familiarity with Snowflake platform, including its architecture and advanced features, is considered an asset.
- Hands-on experience with managing and optimizing both on-premise and cloud-based databases (e.g., MS SQL, IBM DB2) is an asset.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain ETL/ELT processes, real-time data ingestion frameworks, and batch-processing pipelines is required.
- Proficiency in programming languages and frameworks such as SQL, Python, Spark, or similar technologies for data transformation and analytics is a strong asset.
- Demonstrated expertise in data modeling, schema design (3NF/star/snowflake), metadata management, and data governance practices is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
- Fluent in English with strong verbal and written communication skills (French is an asset).
- Successful completion of a credit check, criminal background check, education verification, license and certification verification (where applicable), and employment reference checks is required before employment.
