Axle is seeking a Computer Programmer to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in Research Triangle Park, NC.

Overall Position Summary and Objectives

The purpose of this position is to support data collection, image processing and project management software inside the Cryo-EM Core.


Deliverables:

  • Run Validation - Weekly
  • Meet with lab members to present updates - Weekly

Work Details:

  • Work with staff to improve efficiency of the current data processing by creating new programming approaches. - 1
  • Write custom code in scripting language for the automation of data transfer, storage, and backup. - 2
  • Develop and implement backup strategies for all data and applications in central facilities and as needed at individual workstations; use redundant disk, server, backup and power systems. - 3
  • Evaluates impact of programming modifications.
  • Plan and carry out quality control programs. - 4
  • Implement improvements to development activities to speed development of applications, databases, or software tools. - 5
  • Provides technical experience needed to assist in reviewing, updating, analyzing and modifying existing programming systems.

  • Use advanced knowledge in machine learning, statistics, text mining, natural language processing, computational semantics, computer vision, and data science to develop creative solutions to complex real-world problems.

  • Evaluate new analytic methods and software and adapt them if necessary.

  • Work with staff to develop, test and refine novel programming methods, toolkits, and algorithms.

  • Implement new software for data tracking and management including additions and updates to the database object model.

  • Design and implement computer solutions to novel experimental paradigms.

  • Provide technical experience reviewing, analyzing, and modifying existing programming systems.

  • Provide scientific research and programming support for cutting edge technology and training in the areas of bioinformatics and computational biology.

  • Encodes, tests, debugs and installs new programs using various programming languages.

  • Develop scientific applications using R, Shiny and/or Python.

  • Develop web applications to Linux servers.

  • Deploy applications to systems; manage library dependencies.

  • Collaborate with staff to develop, test, refine and apply advanced statistical and computational methods.

  • Develops and schedules data backups, security patches or upgrades, etc.

  • Maintain and monitor applications, databases, or software tools.

  • Test and install the software updates.

  • Documents all assignments and creates various reports as needed.

  • Provide written technical descriptions of implemented algorithms; contribute to the publication of the lab’s software and research.

  • Writes and maintains program documentation.

  • Provide written technical descriptions of implemented algorithms; contribute to the publication of the lab’s software and research.

  • Documents programming problems and resolutions for future reference.

  • Manage and troubleshoot deployments and image builds.

  • Develop new code and refine/troubleshoot existing code.

  • Troubleshoot scripts and programs to ensure successful use of said scripts and programs.

  • Document in-house software for training and reference purposes.

  • Provides assistance with planning, building and maintaining applications to meet an end user's needs.

  • Implement improvements to development activities to speed development of applications, databases, or software tools.

  • Automate data transfer among heterogeneous computer platforms, including UNIX, Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

  • Troubleshoots any issues or problems and implements appropriate corrective actions.

  • Develop new code and refine/troubleshoot existing code.

  • Troubleshoot scripts and programs to ensure successful use of said scripts and programs.

  • Document in-house software for training and reference purposes.

  • Provides guidance and problem resolution for users.

  • Develop and implement new or major revisions to applications, databases, or software tools.

     

  • Refines data and formats final product.

This role has a market-competitive salary with an anticipated base compensation range listed below. Actual salaries will vary depending on a candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and location.
