The AI Integrity team is a part of Responsible AI, an organization dedicated to ensuring all AI systems built by Microsoft are safe, secure, and beneficial to society. The AI Integrity team is focused on addressing explicitly adversarial behavior: protecting our customers from fraud and abuse, predicting and preventing future attacks, efficient mitigation of ongoing threats.

 

In this role, you will design and implement backend services and data tools that discover, detect and stop various abuses of AI systems, including investigation and mitigation of new incidents. AI Integrity is at the forefront of protecting millions of users of the vast array of AI products offered by Microsoft. Thus, you will collaborate closely with product teams (Azure OpenAI, Copilot, M365), security, ML research and model teams to ensure our defenses are fast, reliable, intelligent, and comprehensive.

 

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer - Responsible AI who is passionate about AI safety and security, is eager to learn and build with new technologies, who is independent, and is interested in designing and building systems and tools end-to-end.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and implements code for a product, service, or feature, reusing code as applicable.
  • Writes and learns to create code that is extensible and maintainable.
  • Considers diagnosability, reliability, and maintainability with few defects, and understands when the code is ready to be shared and delivered.
  • Applies coding patterns and best practices to write code.
  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
  • Leads discussions for the architecture of products/solutions and creates proposals for architecture by testing design hypotheses and helping to refine code plans.
  • Contributes to the development of automation within production and deployment of a complex product feature.
  • Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements for a scenario.
  • Leverages a variety of feedback channels to incorporate insights into future designs or solution fixes.
  • Ensures appropriate continuous feedback loops measuring customer value, usage patterns, and other actionable metrics of value are incorporated.
  • Identifies areas to efforts to integrate instrumentation for gathering telemetry data on system behavior such as performance, reliability, availability, usage, and safety mechanisms.
  • Contributes to sustaining feedback loops from telemetry resulting in subsequent designs. Helps to create outputs of telemetry such as notifications or dashboards.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in designing and developing production backend services and data pipelines
  • 2+ years of experience/knowledge with AI technology products and tools
  • 1+ years of experience with technologies such as Docker/Kubernetes

Other Requirements: 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as Python, C#, Java, and JavaScript
  • Experience with building trust and safety AI/ML systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and build systems end-to-end.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adopt new tools, languages, technologies.
  • Experience in collaborating across disciplines and teams.

 

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
