The Center for Biomedical Research Support (CBRS) is a collection of 10 service centers that operates under the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors (OVPR) and broadly supports the research community on campus and externally. CBRS serves a central role across all of campus to provide access to cutting-edge technology, expert advice, and centralized services. CBRS is comprised of core facilities including Biomedical Imaging, Bioinformatics, Biological Mass Spectrometry, Biomedical Research Computing, Cryo-EM imaging, Genome Sequencing, Microscopy/Flow Cytometry and Mouse Genetic Engineering. In addition, CBRS provides laboratory support in the forms of stockrooms, electronics repair, and external services drop boxes. 

The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility is one of the 10 service centers within the Center for Biomedical Research Support that operates under the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors to support the research community on campus and externally.

The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility provides services, self-service equipment, and collaborative research for the detection, characterization, and quantification of proteins, metabolites and other biomolecules.

The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility is seeking a Research Engineering/Scientist Associate II to provide proteomics and metabolomics services using HPLC and mass spectrometry in the Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility. They will develop methods, train users, mange lab computers, engage in outreach activities and administrative and safety tasks.

Purpose

The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility Research Associate II serve and provide proteomics and metabolomics services using HPLC and mass spectrometry in the Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility. The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility Research Associate II will educate and train users, develop methods, manage lab computers and laboratory backups, engage in outreach, and assist with administrative duties.

Responsibilities

  • Provide services in liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, including molecular weight determination, proteomics and metabolomics via LC-MS/MS. Learn and perform standard lab protocols for operating instruments, preparing samples, and analyzing results. Deliver results to users electronically within the expected turnaround time. Operate and do routine maintenance on the lab HPLCs and mass spectrometers. Develop new methods related to user needs.

  • Manage lab computers and data backups. Assist with administrative duties and lab organization and safety tasks.

  • Train users, engage in educational and outreach activities.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in chemistry, biology, or in a field related to the work to be performed. 

  • Experience in operating HPLC and mass spectrometry for proteomics and metabolomics. 

  • Data processing skills for analyzing data. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for working in a team environment and collaborating with on- and off-site research labs. 

  • Ability to multi-task. 

  • Ability to work independently and perform service work with expected turnaround and quality control.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in HPLC and mass spectrometry instrumentation operation. 

  • Experience with protein sample preparation protocols relevant to proteomics. 

  • Experience with MALDI. 

  • Experience with Orbitrap instrumentation and nanoflow UPLC. 

  • Experience with proteomics and metabolomics method development for identification and quantitation by LC-MS/MS. 

  • Core facility experience. 

  • Experience with using multiple data processing software for metabolomics and proteomics. Python and/or R coding skills.

Salary

$50,000 + depending on qualifications
