About us

Pomelo Care is a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, engineers and problem solvers who are passionate about improving care for moms and babies. We are transforming outcomes for pregnant people and babies with evidence-based pregnancy and newborn care at scale. Our technology-driven care platform enables us to engage patients early, conduct individualized risk assessments for poor pregnancy outcomes, and deliver coordinated, personalized virtual care throughout pregnancy, NICU stays, and the first postpartum year. We measure ourselves by reductions in preterm births, NICU admissions, c-sections and maternal mortality; we improve outcomes and reduce healthcare spend.

Role Description

Your North Star: Create, analyze, and visualize foundational data that we can use to improve the lives of moms and babies.

We’re looking to bring on an experienced data scientist to build and improve the tools we use to deliver care to patients. Trustworthy, actionable data plays a critical role in Pomelo’s mission to improve pregnancy outcomes. As a data scientist, you will generate data and insights that guide the development of our virtual care platform and patient care model. Specifically, you will:

  • Become an expert in the data that Pomelo has about our patient care and clinical outcomes, and play a foundational role in building the data culture of Pomelo
  • Collaborate on designing and implementing new systems that enable our clinical team to deliver personalized, data-driven care
  • Complete exploratory analyses to inform development of new tools and product features, such as conversation topic categorization and patient journey segmentations
  • Define and implement metrics that measure the performance of Pomelo’s tools and products
  • Develop algorithms to identify high priority patients and guide clinician engagement and interventions
  • Leverage AI to transform unstructured data on patient care into actionable insights that improve patient experience and outcomes
  • Identify opportunities to use data to improve how we provide patient care, and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to develop and implement new tools, models, and processes at the point of care

Who you are

You are a collaborative problem solver and analytic thinker who is focused on driving impact, and excited to work at a startup. Specifically,

  • You have 3+ years professional experience in data analytics, data science, data engineering, or statistical analysis involving SQL
  • You have 3+ years professional experience working in healthcare
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., Python)
  • Passionate about improving maternal health outcomes
  • Experienced scoping and implementing data-driven solutions to ambiguous problems, prioritizing efficacy over complexity
  • Excited to work cross-functionally across technical and non-technical stakeholders, including folks who do not share your technical expertise
  • A strong communicator and a keen nose for value - someone who can easily and quickly understand the needs of different audiences

Bonus points if you have any of the following

  • Experience with data dashboarding or visualization (e.g., Looker, Tableau, Metabase)
  • Experience with AI product prototyping and leveraging LLMs for analytics
  • Experience working with dbt

Why you should join our team

By joining Pomelo, you will get in on the ground floor of a fast-moving, well-funded, and mission-driven startup that always puts the patient first. You will learn, grow and be challenged -- and have fun with your team while doing it.

We strive to create an environment where employees from all backgrounds are respected. We also offer:

  • Competitive healthcare benefits
