Job Description

Data Analyst

We are looking to add a full-time person to our dynamic research lab for a project coordinated with and funded by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Utah has a large monitoring program for ungulates that includes capture and handling of more than 1,000 bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, pronghorn, and other ungulates each year. These animals are captured, given a health assessment, and fitted with a GPS transmitter prior to release. The data are then used for research purposes in addition to providing information back to Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. We provide multiple graduate students and undergraduate students to help in this effort and would benefit from a full-time employee to help oversee and coordinate the many students and initiatives associated with the monitoring effort.

 

What you’ll do in this position:

  • Organize and prepare capture kits and GPS collars
  • Produce quarterly estimates of survival for animals with GPS collars
  • Assist with data collection and data entry during capture season
  • Help mentor and supervise undergraduate students who are assisting with monitoring effort
  • Prepare updates and presentations to share with partners as requested 

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU. 
  • MS degree in Wildlife and Wildlands Conservation or a related field
  • Experience with estimation of survival

Preferred

  • MS in Wildlife and Wildlands Conservation or related field
  • Experience with databases, spreadsheets, and estimation of survival

Pay Grade: 47

Typical Starting Pay: $18.50 to $23.25 an hour
