The Opportunity

The Senior AI/ML Engineer, Applied Research position works out of our Sylmar, CA location in the Cardiac Rhythm Management Division. As a global leader in Cardiac Rhythm Technologies, we focus on innovative technologies that can improve the way doctors treat people with heart arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats.

What You’ll Work On

Lead the development of innovative ML-enabled features on a novel device and cloud platform. The candidate will be responsible for big data engineering, data wrangling, and data analysis in the Cloud. The role will also contribute to defining and implementing Big Data Strategy for the organization along with driving the implementation of solutions for the business. The candidate will be working with other data engineers, data analysts and data scientists to focus on applying data engineering, data science and machine learning approaches to solve business problems.  
 
As a senior member of the Applied Research team, you will be building data analytics capabilities to uncover customer, product and operational insights. Candidate should be able to develop data pipelines capable of handling complex data sets quickly and securely as well as operationalize data science solutions. Additionally, they will be working in a malleable technology-driven environment utilizing tools such as Databricks, Azure, Spark etc. 

The candidate should have a passion for data science and software engineering in a biomedical space. Highly sought-after qualities include versatility and a desire to continuously learn, improve, and empower other team members. Candidate will support building scalable, highly available, efficient, and secure software solutions for big data initiatives.

Additionally, the digital health applied research candidate identifies, plans, recommends, and completes technical programs leading to innovative applications of new and existing products and technologies having major division or company-wide importance. Designs and carries out research projects and investigations using available data. Disseminates findings and product implications to management, engineers and, where appropriate, to the scientific community through publications, conferences, and reports.  Investigates patent implications of research outcomes and coordinates applications with intellectual property attorneys.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or similar with an emphasis in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience, in Software Engineering, Data Engineering or Big Data
  • Software development experience, ideally in Python, PySpark, Java, C#
  • Knowledge of or direct experience with Databricks and/or Spark and with Azure
  • Practical Knowledge of Linux  
  • A willingness to learn new software development languages to meet goals and objectives.
  • Self-motivated with ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines (e.g., electrical, software, systems) to meet program milestones.
  • Basic experience in exploratory data analysis and visualization.
  • Experience in preparation and manipulation of training and validation datasets, including data structuring, normalization, augmentation, and synthetic methods.
  • Understanding of conventional statistical methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of strategies for processing large amounts of structured and unstructured data, including integrating data from multiple sources 
  • Knowledge of data cleaning, wrangling, visualization and reporting 
  • Ability to explore new alternatives or options to solve data mining issues, and utilize a combination of industry best practices, data innovations and experience 
  • Familiarity of databases, BI applications, data quality and performance tuning 


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Database creation/usage experience to manage, store and query multimodal datasets (e.g,. PostgreSQL, Mongo, etc.)
  • Proficiency in common AI/ML programming languages (at least one of): Python (preferred), R, Julia, or MATLAB.
  • Proficiency with common libraries used for numeric manipulation and machine learning such as Numpy, Pandas, Scikit-Learn, Tensorflow, Keras, etc.
  • Master’s or PhD with an emphasis on multimodal machine learning.
  • Hands-on experience with a variety of supervised, semi-supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods.
  • Experience in transferring trained models to a production cloud environment, e.g., API implementation, containerization.
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485, 14971, etc.
  • Experience in compiling and optimization techniques (e.g., quantization, pruning, compression) to deploy models on edge devices
  • Experience in model life cycle management within an distributed HPC environment such as Azure Databricks.
  • Experienced in the sequential phases of the medical device development from early feasibility and VOC through development, test, commercial launch, and post-market support.
  • Experience in first-in-human and pivotal clinical trials.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with cardiac anatomy and interventional cardiology.
  • Excellent written, verbal and listening communication skills 
  • Comfortable working asynchronously with a distributed team 
  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.

The base pay for this position is

$98,000.00 – $196,000.00

In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
