Bankwest's Technology Division develops and executes all technical change within the organisation ensuring the leverage of technology to deliver the Bankwest strategy. The Division works on a wide variety of technologies and projects with the support of a dedicated team in an Agile methodology. Our team is responsible for the world-leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of the bank – from product platforms for our customers, to essential tools within our business.

The principal engineer role will report directly to the Crew Tech Lead for Seamless Lending Crew and Resilient Lending Crew and sit across both lending crews to lead and drive technology roadmap to support the Bankwest vision of becoming Australia’s favourite digital bank.

Our mission is to create seamless, intuitive, and fully integrated lending experiences that reduce time and effort for brokers and customers - powered by innovative solutions and AI-driven insights that streamline decisions, simplify processes, and transform how lending gets done.

You will provide core technology and domain expertise to inform technical strategy be responsible for the design of the solutions for complex challenges within a business unit. You’ll have a strong risk mindset and take a security from the first line of code approach. Those around you to invest in their own engineering craft, as well as building class leading applications is something that you’ll be passionate about. Also, you will be working with Commbank’s top engineers and AI experts to drive training, culture and experimentation so that all of our engineers are making the best use of the emerging AI technologies that make them happier and more productive.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

• Possesses full-cycle engineering experience: ideation, technical design, build, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance.

• Designs and implements innovative technical solutions to complex problems, including onboarding and migrating to new tooling as well as removing obsolete systems and code.

• Have a proven track record in developing large-scale digital applications utilizing modern technology stacks.

• Provides overall engineering leadership for Bankwest Seamless Lending Crew and Resilient Lending Crew, including software, systems, quality and site reliability.

• Have ability to design technology solutions to meet the highest possible quality standards while simultaneously balancing security, performance, availability, and maintainability concerns.

• Drives automation practices and DevSecOps journey for the crews

• Are well versed with solution architecture, technology blueprints, engineering roadmaps, and translating the project vision into actionable plans.

• Actively embraces and integrates AI-driven solutions (including LLMs and agentic AI approaches) to enhance our engineering workflows and product capabilities.

• Exceptional strategic thinking and ability to define long-term technical direction for teams and organisations

• Strong mentoring and leadership skills, with a passion for upskilling engineers and fostering a culture of innovation

• The ability to influence cross-functional teams, articulate trade-offs, and align technical decisions with business objectives

Tech Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:

• A proven track record of leading and delivering large-scale, complex engineering initiatives

• Expertise with AI/ML technologies and their application in accelerating the product development lifecycle including Generative AI

• Demonstrated ability to evaluate emerging AI tools and integrate them into engineering workflows

• Deep knowledge of architectural patterns, cloud-native solutions on AWS & Azure, microservices architecture, solutions integration and containerisation

• Proficiency in agile development methodologies and iterative experimentation from idea to prototype to pilot to product

• Expertise in full cycle engineering using modern DevSecOps practices, IaC and CI/CD tools

• Strong skills in working with large structured, unstructured and semi-structured datasets
