Job Summary
This position will provide technical support to Wittman Lab Group for Data Visualization for ongoing research as well as provide assistance in lab management.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Hannah Wittman).  This position will work in Dr. Wittman’s group consisting of technicians, graduate and undergraduate students at UBC's Vancouver campus.

Work Performed

  • Works with researchers at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS), the Agroecological Transitions Research Coordinator and CSFS researchers to source CSFS research datasets, including LiteFarm data, and scope out how to visualize them in interactive web and data app dashboards; 

  • Supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of farm data visualizations for the LiteFarm research team;

  • Supports the improvement of CSFS research data collection, visualization and sharing tools and processes to make research data more accessible.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Incorrect decisions would likely be costly in terms of wasted time and flawed data. Inappropriate judgment will cause missing data or biased results. Missed deadlines will delay timelines in the Professor’s research project.

Reports to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Hannah Wittman).

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference for an Undergraduate degree in Data Science or Masters of Science is preferred.

  • Comfortable working with CSV and MS Excel complex datasets

  • Experience generating interactive data visualizations (ideally in Tableau) for research and communication purposes

  • Comfortable using programs such as MS Word, Excel or additional survey tools for research management (Qualtrics, Google forms, etc.)

  • Familiarity with management of spatial data (QGIS, etc.) is an asset

  • Efficient organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills

  • Self-motivated, organized, efficient, able to multi-task and work well independently and collaboratively in a dynamic work environment and under time constraints and deadlines;

  • Interested and informed about diversified agriculture, food sustainability and environmental stewardship.

  • Familiarity with agro-ecology, biodiversity, food production data

  • Must use time efficiently and able to multi-task.

  • Must have accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
