You will lead a multidisciplinary team of data scientists and computational biologists to drive innovation in drug discovery and translational research.

Internal Job Title: Director, Data Science

Position Location: Cambridge, MA, onsite. There is the option of this role being located in Basel, CH. A second posting with that location will be opened in the coming week.

About the Role:

Major accountabilities:

  • Create a vision, roadmap and drive the execution of a data science strategy aligned with DAx priorities, including enabling the discovery of translational biomarkers and disease relevant target candidates. 

  • Shape, mentor and lead a high-performing team of data scientists and computational experts across global sites, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.

  • Drive the development of human-centric, data-driven disease in silico models using clinical, genetic, and multi-omic data.

  • Drive innovation and continually develop the team’s and own knowledge in the areas of statistics, deep learning, Machine Learning, AI and related topics.

  • Partner with discovery, clinical, and digital teams to integrate data science into all stages of the R&D pipeline.  Collaborate with researchers and clinicians to identify data needs and provide actionable recommendations, communicate through regular interaction the team

  • Ensure robust data governance, model validation, and reproducibility standards across all projects.

  • Represent the organization in external collaborations, conferences, and consortia to stay at the forefront of biomedical data science.

  • Explore and evaluate new data sources to drive Insights and innovation and to identify opportunities for improvement

  • As a member of DAx Leadership team, provide input into the DAx overall strategy

Minimum Requirements:

  • MS or Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Data Science, or a related field.

  • 10 + years of experience in biomedical research, with at least 5 years in a Data Science leadership role.

  • Proven track record of successfully managing and leading data science teams and/or of applying data science to drug discovery or translational research.

  • Experience in applying machine learning algorithms and advanced analytics to biomedical research; Expertise in machine learning, statistical modeling, and multi-omics integration.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders

  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence across scientific and executive audiences

  • Good coaching and mentoring skills

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience with real-world evidence, biobank data, or clinical trial analytics.

  • Familiarity with regulatory considerations for data-driven biomarker development.

  • Passion for people development and contributing to transformational medicines

The salary for this position is expected to range between $194,600 and $361,400 per year. The final salary offered is determined based on factors like, but not limited to, relevant skills and experience, and upon joining Novartis will be reviewed periodically. Novartis may change the published salary range based on company and market factors.


Your compensation will include a performance-based cash incentive and, depending on the level of the role, eligibility to be considered for annual equity awards. US-based eligible employees will receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, life and disability benefits, a 401(k) with company contribution and match, and a variety of other benefits. In addition, employees are eligible for a generous time off package including vacation, personal days, 
holidays and other leaves.
