Aptive is seeking a Statistician and Data Scientist who serves as the team’s quantitative lead, translating complex clinical and administrative data into statistically valid evidence that underpins Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS) engagements across the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and other healthcare systems. You will design and execute sampling plans, build risk-adjusted analytic models, and deliver clear, actionable insights to auditors and senior clinical stakeholders.
Primary Responsibilities
- Define populations & frames; design stratified or cluster samples that meet audit objectives and GAO/OMB guidance.
- Estimate power and precision; develop complex weighting schemes to ensure representativeness.
- Advise on data-collection protocols and extract requirements from VHA Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) or other relational sources.
- Write efficient SQL to pull structured & semi-structured data from large healthcare databases (CDW, EHR replicas, claims).
- Clean, transform, and integrate data using R, Python, or SAS.
- Conduct regression and causal-inference analyses (GLM, mixed-effects, GEE) and build risk-adjustment algorithms.
- Apply survey-design procedures to account for weights, strata, and clusters; compute design-based variances.
- Perform psychometric assessments (reliability, validity, item-response theory) when measures involve patient-reported outcomes or surveys.
- Translate statistical results into concise findings, graphics, and dashboards for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Document methods to Yellow Book standards; defend assumptions in peer review and with auditee leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field.
- 3 years applying statistical sampling, SQL-based data extraction, and multivariate analysis within healthcare settings; exposure to VA CDW or similar large clinical warehouse strongly preferred.
- Technical Proficiency in SQL (window functions, CTEs, query optimization). One or more analytics languages (R tidyverse, Python pandas/statsmodels, SAS). Version control (Git) and reproducible-research workflows (R Markdown, Jupyter, or Quarto).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
