Internship: Scan Planning GERDA

NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre
What will you be working on?
Aircraft maintenance inspections are often manual tasks performed by inspectors. However, due to an ageing society and shortages in the labour market, there is a shortage of inspectors. Therefore, automation is an interesting way for maintenance companies to increase their productivity. Robots can carry out inspections more accurately and faster than humans. Robots are also well-suited to taking on dangerous, tedious, and dirty jobs.
In cooperation with a maintenance company, we are developing a robot for inspecting engine parts. This robot is equipped with a 3D scanner that is used to detect damage. Data generated by this 3D scanner we want to use to automatically detect defects of the scanned engine parts.
During this internship assignment, you will work with point clouds obtained through a 3D scanner. Point clouds are collections of 3D points that capture the shape and structure of the scanned objects. The goal is to develop a simulation toolset to model and optimize the scanning configuration and scanning trajectories of a laser line scanner. To enable rapid evaluation of different scanning setups in terms of data quality, surface coverage for a given engine component.
Result
You are tasked with developing a simulation of a laser line scanner capturing data around an object, aiming to optimize the scan path for high-quality results.
