Responsibilities & Requirements

Reporting to the Director of Content Management, the Metadata Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the discoverability, accessibility, and organization of library resources, directly impacting the user experience. Given the evolving landscape of metadata standards, digital resources, and emerging technologies, this position is essential for maintaining high-quality, descriptive records, and ensures compliance with current and developing industry standards. 

The metadata managed in this role encompasses both descriptive elements and non-descriptive elements, such as administrative metadata and technical metadata that support the ongoing access and stewardship of library resources.

Responsibilities Include

  • Leads the development, implementation, and documentation of metadata strategies and workflows to enhance access to library resources and collections.
  • Creates, processes, and maintains original descriptive metadata for digital objects (e.g., documents, images, and videos) to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with metadata standards. 
  • Provides technical guidance for data migrations, metadata crosswalks, and automation of metadata processing.
  • Remediates existing outdated descriptive language and promotes the development of diverse, inclusive, and equitable metadata.
  • Contributes to the development of metadata guidelines, projects, and initiatives in support of the library’s strategic directions.
  • Conducts quality assurance and metadata remediation, including validation against controlled vocabularies and review of digital repositories.
  • Researches, recommends, and implements emerging technologies to improve workflow efficiency and enhance records and access.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across SBU Libraries and the SUNY system to develop, implement, and sustain metadata policies and procedures that support metadata-intensive systems and workflows.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of relevant national standards, best practices, and changing opportunities in the field, assessing and integrating these into library practices for best results as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and implements authority maintenance policies and practices across library platforms and systems.
  • Participates in library, campus, national, and international professional committees.
  • Contributes to the field through research, presentations, and scholarship.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Relevant Master’s or advanced degree (foreign equivalent or higher) with a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position.

Preferred Qualifications
One year of experience in metadata workflows for distinctive collections, or other digital and tangible materials. Familiarity with current and emerging metadata standards and schemas (e.g., RDA, BIBFRAME, DC, EAD, MODS, etc). Interest in leveraging emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to streamline processes and enhance discoverability. Record of professional activities, including scholarly activity, presentations, or engagement in professional organizations to achieve tenure requirements.

Tenure Track at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian  [twelve month]

Open immediately; salary $75,000 - $78,100 plus $4,000 location pay
