Autodesk is seeking a Senior Director of Engineering to lead our big data platform efforts, scale our next generation data lake, and help our employees easily leverage data analytics and machine learning to create better outcomes for our customers.
Staying on top of the latest innovations around data systems and flows must be a passion of yours. As part of a larger enterprise ecosystem, our engineering teams will look to you for guidance on how to build modern cloud-based data systems and services that scale to meet the needs of our business. Our team is versatile, polyglot, and cross-functional. We work in AWS, Snowflake, Azure, using Python, Java, C++, javascript, SQL, Json, Presto, Spark, Kafka, Flink and much more. The team is geographically dispersed, and values transparency, collaborative communication and cooperation.
This is a Senior Director-level role within the Analytics Data leadership team and provides a unique opportunity to drive innovation and transformational change with our employees and how they create value from data. A successful candidate will not only have the technical expertise to drive a compelling big data strategy but will also possess the business acumen and gravitas to inspire people to bring that strategy to life.
As this role oversees a global organization, you will work across multiple time zones and will travel up to 15% of the time for in-person meetings such as conferences, team offsites, and customer visits. This position has a preference to be hybrid to our San Francisco office or pacific time zone is preferred.
Responsibilities
Execution of platform and domain architecture for Analytics Data systems and related components of the Analytics Data Platform
Influencing and collaborating with stakeholders and teammates to deeply understand requirements for software architecture and implementation
Interpret both internal and external customer requirements and execute on architectural models that will operate at large scale and high-performance
Work with a global team of engineers to build data ingestion, data management, and data insight frameworks that emphasize a platform mentality and utilize AWS and other best of breed data offerings
Engage with the rest of the Autodesk technical community to evangelize, defend and adapt how to best produce and consume big data as it aligns to the company’s continuing digital transformation
Drive implementation to ensure non-functional requirements such as availability, scalability, reliability, security, compliance, governance is all in place
Passion for following and incorporating emerging trends in big data and AI technology
Minimum Qualifications
Highly technical systems driver with 15+ years of big data platform experience: APIs, front-end, backend, data warehouses and lakes, persistence, microservices, ETLs, Stream processing, data for AI, data quality, governance and security, Analytics/CDPs, Cloud Infrastructure management/IaaS/PaaS
Excellent verbal and written communications skills are a must have, as well as the ability to work effectively across internal and external organizations and virtual teams
Strong leadership, problem solving, communication, and influencing skills
Ability to understand complex business requirements and quickly and iteratively execute against them in a highly matrixed environment
Strong experience in API and Pub/Sub architecture with hands on implementation experience at scale
Strong experience with real-time streaming architecture and technologies like Kafka, Spark-streaming and Flink
Experience serving as Engineering Director for applications on cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure)
Experience building and operating big data query engines (such as Spark, Presto, Hive), databases (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Dynamo), and data warehouses (such as Snowflake, Redshift)
Deep knowledge of foundation infrastructure requirements such as Networking, Storage, and Hardware Optimization with hands-on experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree in computer science, MIS, engineering, or related discipline
Track record of implementing AWS services in a variety of environments, from startups to large enterprises
Deep understanding of data ingestion patterns (for both event based and structural data) and understanding of related concepts (such as data cataloging and data lineage, etc.)
Demonstrated industry leadership in the fields of data warehousing, data science and data processing

Salary transparency
Salary is one part of Autodesk’s competitive compensation package. For U.S.-based roles, we expect a starting base salary between $210,800 and $341,000. Offers are based on the candidate’s experience and geographic location, and may exceed this range. In addition to base salaries, our compensation package may include annual cash bonuses, commissions for sales roles, stock grants, and a comprehensive benefits package.Equal Employment Opportunity
