The HR Technology team owns and supports the groups People Technology capabilities. You will play a key role in being part of the AI & Data Engineering team.

The AI & Data Engineering team is seeking an experienced Staff Data engineer to join us, with a function dedicated to working with Commonwealth Bank’s global engineering community to use both internal and AI assisted tools and capabilities in ways that improve the engineering experience and productivity.

We are seeking passionate, cloud savvy, data engineers across diverse levels to help drive our commitments in our HR AI & Data Strategy and achieve our vision for Commbank.data, a unified, world-class data platform enabling the next generation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) enabled applications.  

The HR Technology function in CBA is responsible for designing and leading technical skills build across the organization to prepare their people to be skills-ready for today and tomorrow. This includes reskilling and talent development to support the business’ aim to be the number 1 digital bank. The HR Technology function is also focused on creating a better day at work for their people through HR innovation across platforms, processes, and channels, delivering easy-to-use solutions that help their people and support the Group meet their regulatory obligations.  
 

We are seeking people who are:

• Strong hands-on engineering experience across the entire development lifecycle

• Possess the ability to work independently and drive a culture where quality, excellence and openness are championed

• Are passionate about creating excellent modern AI experiences

• Are constantly thinking outside the box and breaking boundaries to solve complex technical problems

• Very good understanding and experience with Shift left testing techniques and the importance of it

• Can utilise strong understanding of core business and technical strategies to deliver best business outcomes through technical implementation

• Can mentor junior engineers and be able to contribute both individually and as a team player

• Collaborate with data scientists, engineers and stakeholders to define and implement technical requirements. Translate needs into technical solutions and ensure the platform's reliability through robust monitoring, logging, and alerting systems

• Understands how to drive to an outcome – how to get stuff shipped, tested, and well

Technical Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:

• Data Engineering skills Must Have - EMR, Glue, Redshift, Airflow, Dataform, Iceberg, Athena, S3, SQL, Python, Git, Github Actions, ETL, Data Modeling (DW or Big data, JSON, XML, CSV. File ingress / egress solutions in AWS.

• Knowledge or exposure working with Artifactory,  Jupyter Notes, Unix shell scripts, Test automation, AWS services (lambda, ECS, basic knowledge on Networking), REST APIs, API Gateway, Event streaming.

• Experience in developing using Python, .NET framework, JavaScript frameworks (Next JS), APIs and databases such as Aurora

• Experience developing microservices architecture on cloud platforms

• Strong understanding of modern Cloud technology stacks (ideally with AWS certifications) and how it can most effectively be utilised and managed in enterprise environments

• Sound knowledge of AI/ML and Gen AI applications

• Unit testing frameworks such as NUnit, XUnit, Jest, Mocha, Blazemeter

• BDD/TDD - Any one of if Cucumber / Specflow / ReqNRoll or anything similar

• UI web testing Frameworks - Playwright, Selenium

• Testing frameworks and practices that supports different testing types in a testing lifecycle

• Experience with DevSecOps including key capabilities such as Observability, Security, and Automation of build and change activities

Good to have -

• A keen interest and understanding around building Agentic AI systems

• A keen interest in researching new AI tooling and you are a daily user of AI coding assistants such as Cursor, Continue, GitHub CoPilot, Aider, Cline, Roo Code etc
