About the job
We are searching for a creative and analytical Geospatial Data Scientist to join our collaborative data science team. State specific pay scales for this role are as follows:
$105,245 to $199,452 (CA, NJ, NY, WA, HI, AK, MD, CT, RI, MA)
$95,677 to $181,320 (NV, OR, AZ, CO, WY, TX, ND, MN, MO, IL, WI, FL, GA, MI, OH, VA, PA, DE, VT, NH, ME)
$86,110 to $163,188 (UT, ID, MT, NM, SD, NE, KS, OK, IA, AR, LA, MS, AL, TN, KY, IN, SC, NC, WV)
The expected base salary for this position will vary depending on a number of factors, including relevant experience, skills and location.
Responsibilities
What You'll Achieve:
- Architect & Automate Data Flow: Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable geospatial data pipelines using Python and open-source libraries (e.g., GeoPandas, Rasterio) to ensure a seamless flow of high-quality data for analysis.
- Master Diverse Geospatial Data: Ingest, clean, and validate a wide array of geospatial data types—from vector and raster to point cloud and tiled indexes (like H3)—transforming raw information into analysis-ready assets.
- Uncover Hidden Patterns: Apply advanced spatial statistical methods, including spatial clustering and spatiotemporal mining, to identify and model critical patterns and trends that will drive our business strategy.
- Drive Collaborative Solutions: Partner closely with data scientists, engineers, and business leaders to understand their challenges, define data requirements, and strategically expand our central geospatial data library.
- Visualize & Communicate Insights: Create compelling interactive visualizations and dashboards with tools like Hex, Kepler.gl, or ArcGIS to translate complex spatial analysis into clear, actionable stories for stakeholders at all levels
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geography, Computer Science, Data Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience working with machine learning, geospatial data and GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Carto).
- Proficiency in Python, with experience using geospatial libraries (e.g., GeoPandas, Shapely, Rasterio).
Preferred:
- Experience working in the insurance or reinsurance industry, particularly in roles involving exposure modeling, catastrophe risk, or underwriting analytics.
- Familiarity with catastrophe modeling platforms (e.g., Verisk Touchstone, Moody’s RMS).
- Understanding of catastrophe risk concepts and metrics such as Hazard & Vulnerability, EP, TVaR, and AAL.
