What you’ll do

We are seeking an entrepreneurial technical lead for the role of Director, Applied AI to drive the development and deployment of large-scale multimodal machine learning models at Tempus.Ā

You will lead a team of machine learning scientists and engineers dedicated to designing, training, and validating large-scale multimodal models aimed at advancing innovative solutions in healthcare and life sciences. By rapidly developing prototypes for experimentation and efficiently scaling successful concepts into reliable, production-ready systems, you will help accelerate innovation. As a principal technical leader, you will shape architectural decisions and play a pivotal role in defining and advancing Tempus’ multimodal model architecture and strategic direction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, training, and deployment of large-scale multimodal machine learning models, integrating data from multiple sources (e.g., genomics, imaging, electronic health records, and other real-world data).

  • Rapidly prototype new ideas and approaches, iterating quickly to test hypotheses and scaling successful prototypes into production-ready systems.

  • Drive key architectural decisions and contribute to the overall strategy for Tempus’ multimodal model development.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including business stakeholders, R&D, Clinical Development, and Engineering—to define project requirements and deliverables.

  • Apply state-of-the-art deep learning and machine learning techniques to extract actionable insights from complex, high-dimensional datasets.

  • Champion technical excellence and operational rigor across the team and organization.

  • Mentor and coach junior team members, fostering best practices in large-scale model development, data integration, and machine learning methodologies.

  • Stay current with the latest advancements in deep learning, multimodal modeling, and machine learning, evaluating new tools and approaches for potential adoption.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or Master’s degree in a quantitative or computational discipline such as Computer Science, Physics, Statistics, Bioinformatics, or a related field.

  • At least 10 years of hands-on experience designing, developing, and deploying machine learning solutions in production settings, with a particular focus on deep learning methodologies.

  • Proven leadership experience managing and mentoring teams of 8 or more scientists.

  • Expert knowledge of deep learning architectures and principles, with significant experience in transformer-based models. Proven expertise in multimodal machine learning, including advanced fusion techniques for integrating text, image, and other data modalities. Strong grasp of optimization strategies for training and scaling large models. Understanding of knowledge representation, including knowledge graphs and ontologies.

  • Advanced proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.

  • Experience working with distributed computing and cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, Azure).

  • Demonstrated experience training large-scale multimodal models using distributed training frameworks and managing GPU clusters.

  • Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant fields.

  • Ability to excel in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and effectively manage shifting priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with clinical, molecular, imaging, or other domain-specific data (optional).

  • Background in healthcare, life sciences, or related domains is a plus.
