The opportunity:

As the Manager of Reinsurance, you will lead a dedicated team responsible for reinsurance administration, reporting and analysis, treaty management, and strategic initiatives. Through effective oversight of these functions, you will play a key role in enhancing business performance and supporting the achievement of organisational objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Effectively lead and provide support to all aspects of reinsurance work within the Finance Reinsurance function, in particular, take ownership for the following: 

  • Knowledge – keep abreast of best practice methodologies applicable in life insurance and more broadly across financial services and bring these to the Finance team and the broader business.

  • Data and models – ensure data, models and related processes used by AIA NZ Finance Reinsurance function are fit for purpose and meet business needs. 

  • Model and process development – continuously develop and improve the efficiency and robustness of models and processes relevant to the Finance Reinsurance function. Manage models in line with the requirements of AIA NZ’s model risk governance framework. 

  • Business as usual reinsurance processes – ensure all BAU reinsurance functions are performed accurately and delivered on a timely basis.

  • Reinsurance analysis and reporting – ensure all analysis and reporting requirements are met. Analyse reinsurance treaty efficiency and performance. Provide support and recommendations to key stakeholders in managing reinsurance treaties.

  • Strategic reinsurance projects – perform and manage strategic reinsurance inititiatives or projects, including but not limited to, reinsurance optimisation, recaptures, treaty renewals and treaty amendments.

  • Effectively manage and mentor finance analysts.

  • Ensure that the relevant concepts and methodologies are correctly applied in the work completed by the team.

  • Review work completed by Reinsurance Analysts and other specialists in the team.

  • Produce, document and present value-add insights and results to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Communicate and present technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Assist in preparation of finance reports, and Financial Risk Committee and Board papers.

  • Engage with teams across AIA NZ and contribute to the broader business.

  • Build and maintain effective relationships across Finance and Actuarial, as well as other AIA NZ teams, including but not limited to Claims, Product and Pricing.

  • Build and manage relationship with AIA NZ’s reinsurers

  • Proactively take ownership of emerging issues and challenges.

  • Apply software skills as applicable including AIA NZ systems, SQL, Python, MS Office package, Prophet, DCS and R.

  • Understand and adhere to AIA NZ’s risk management framework and the relevant policies

    • Identify and raise awareness of risk management issues

    • Manage investigation of incidents; and

    • Manage testing of controls and validations of models.

Ideally, you’ll bring:

  • Strong business acumen and ability to deal with ambiguity.

  • Proven project and team management skills .

  • Proven ability to apply a mixture of analysis, experience and judgement to solve complex business problems.

  • Strong leadership skills and proven ability to engage and influence non-actuarial stakeholders and business partners.

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of theory and practice across at least one aspect of finance work (e.g. financial reporting, valuations, solvency and capital management, reinsurance, etc.)

  • Proven strong technical skills including software skills (including AIA systems, SQL, Python, MS Office package, Prophet, DCS and R) and analytical skills.

Role Related Experience

  • Proven project and/or team management experience.

  • Strong financial services industry experience (ideally life or health insurance, but other financial services experience will be also considered).

  • Strong understanding of NZ life insurance legislative and statutory requirements.

  • Strong understanding of AIA NZ’s commercial environment (including products, markets and competitors).

  • Reinsurance experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification with quantitative background (e.g. mathematics, statistics or engineering).

  • Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Actuaries or qualified Chartered Accountant Austraila and New Zealand (or equivalent) preferred.

  • Comply with continuing professional development requirements and professional standards of the relevant actuarial body.
