We’re determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals – and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.

The Hartford’s Small Commercial IT Team is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Manager, Software Engineering to lead engineering teams in transforming applications to cloud-native and digital-first frameworks. This role requires strong leadership in driving full-stack engineering practices, cloud migration, and modern architecture design on AWS.

In addition to core engineering leadership, we are looking for someone with hands-on experience in Generative AI (GenAI) and Agentic AI systems—including the integration of AI agents into enterprise applications, prompt engineering, and orchestration of AI workflows. The ideal candidate will bring a forward-thinking mindset to help shape the future of intelligent software delivery.
You will work in an agile environment and collaborate across multiple teams to deliver impactful business outcomes as part of a large-scale transformation initiative.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement scalable, fault-tolerant software systems and modern architecture patterns, with a strong emphasis on AWS cloud-native solutions.

  • Mentor and guide junior software engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and technical excellence.

  • Troubleshoot complex issues across software and infrastructure layers, ensuring high availability and performance.

  • Automate disaster recovery, high availability, and fault tolerance strategies using infrastructure-as-code and cloud-native tooling.

  • Present innovative ideas to leadership and contribute to knowledge-sharing sessions to elevate team capabilities.

  • Lead the standardization and implementation of reusable architectures and deployment patterns for AWS-hosted applications.

  • Engineer applications with best practices for fault tolerance, data replication, and multi-region support.

  • Own end-to-end solution delivery—including design, development, and maintenance—across platforms using Java, Spring, Spring Boot, JavaScript, and AngularJS.

  • Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using CloudFormation, YAML, build specs, and Lambda functions to enable fully automated CI/CD pipelines.

  • Leverage AWS services such as Lambda, CloudWatch, ECS, EKS, RDS, S3, IAM, SNS, SQS, EventBridge, Transfer Family, and Service Catalog.

  • Evaluate technology trade-offs and make informed decisions to maximize customer value and delivery efficiency.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and empower teams to implement innovative solutions.

  • Take ownership of solving customer problems through effective use of modern technologies and engineering practices.

  • Identify and lead the integration of Generative AI (GenAI) and Agentic AI capabilities into enterprise applications to enhance automation, personalization, and decision-making.

  • Collaborate with data science and architecture teams to design and implement AI-powered features using LLMs, vector databases, and orchestration frameworks.

  • Develop and manage AI agents that can autonomously perform tasks, interact with users, and adapt to changing business contexts.

  • Apply prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and fine-tuning techniques to optimize AI performance and relevance.

  • Ensure responsible AI practices, including model evaluation, bias mitigation, and compliance with governance standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred.

  • 9+ years of experience in application software development, including 3+ years in a technical leadership or team management role.

  • Proven expertise in designing and building scalable, secure, and resilient systems using Java, Spring, Spring Boot, AngularJS, and JavaScript.

  • 3+ years of experience in software architecture and systems design, with a strong understanding of distributed systems and cloud-native patterns.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across technical and business teams.

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, or AWS CDK.

  • Hands-on experience with DevOps and CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitHub Actions, AWS CodeBuild, Jenkins, SonarQube, and Rally.

  • Proficiency with relational databases such as Oracle, and familiarity with open-source databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL).

  • Ability to write automation scripts and tools to eliminate manual processes and improve operational efficiency.

  • Deep understanding of AWS services including Lambda, CloudWatch, ECS, EKS, RDS, S3, IAM, SNS, SQS, EventBridge, and others.

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to evaluate technology trade-offs and deliver customer-centric solutions.

  • Experience designing and deploying solutions using Generative AI (GenAI) technologies, including large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

  • Familiarity with Agentic AI systems and orchestration frameworks for building autonomous agents that interact with users and systems.

  • Understanding of responsible AI practices, including model evaluation, bias mitigation, and governance.

  • Ability to identify AI use cases and lead cross-functional teams in integrating GenAI into enterprise applications and workflows.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
