This role is based in our Sydney office with Hybrid working arrangement.
Role Purpose
The Strategic Portfolio Analyst is responsible for developing qualitative and quantitative analysis to support the optimisation of SEA’s current and target supply, retail and trading portfolio. This role will support the decisions to acquire strategic deals, and report on key qualitative and quantitative market information that may impact SEA’s portfolio strategy.
This analytical role will focus on disseminating external information to various internal business groups through thorough analysis and innovative ideas to maximise the value derived from SEA’s deals and combined portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
• Portfolio optimisation lead: support the process for determining an optimal combined retail and supply portfolio. Support the process for allocating a portfolio optimisation benefit to specific supply, retail or trading deals.
• Strategic deal support: lead the assessment of the strategic suitability of deals being presented by the Trading, Origination and Retail teams by conducting quantitative and qualitative assessments of the deal specifics vs strategic portfolio requirements. Closely collaborate with the Valuations Analyst and origination, retail and trading teams on specific deal decisions.
• External market strategy lead: lead the development of an external market strategy by reading, summarising and sharing information internally on key market reports, relevant energy market news, competitor analyses, and other macroeconomic factors like regulatory / government change.
• Medium and long-term price forecasting support: support the development of medium- and long-term price forecasts by supporting the assumptions setting process and procuring price forecasts via a consultant and/or developing internal proprietary long-term price forecasts. Support the presentation of results in order get approved price forecasts for valuations.
• Technical development and best practices: develop high quality software and models (primarily using Python, SQL, excel, Spark, or otherwise) and utilize operational best practices (Git repos, production and development environments, testing, documentation) to maximise the efficiency of the team.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Broader analytical tasks: assist with analytical tasks and new product development for Retail, Trading, and Origination functions as required.
- Policy adherence: ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to.
Performance Indicators:
• Accuracy & Reliability of Portfolio Optimisation Models – Continuous improvement in portfolio optimisation models and application of a quantitative portfolio benefit to strategic deal acquisition.
• Effectiveness of Valuations support – Improvements in deal valuations using a quantitative and qualitative portfolio-led approach.
• Strategic Impact – Successful integration of market and competitor insights into trading, origination, and retail strategies.
• Operational Efficiency – Adoption of best practices in model development, automation, and version control.
Experience:
• Experience in energy market analysis, forecasting, or deal valuations.
• Strong track record in developing quantitative models and valuation tools for energy trading, origination, or retail pricing.
• Experience working with large datasets, forecasting methodologies, and optimization techniques.
Knowledge:
• Energy Markets & Asset Valuation – Deep understanding of wholesale energy markets, renewable generation, firming assets, financial structures, and contract valuation.
• Forecasting & Quantitative Modelling – Expertise in time-series forecasting, regression analysis, statistical modelling, and linear optimisation for energy supply and pricing forecasts.
• Programming & Data Science – Strong skills in Python, SQL, Excel, Spark, and familiarity with APIs, machine learning models, and cloud-based analytics.
• Risk & Portfolio Analytics – Knowledge of risk modelling and portfolio valuation techniques in energy markets.
• Software development (Python, SQL, Spark, excel, etc.)
• Software best practices (GitHub, testing, documentation, etc.)
