Purpose

Lori Holt, a Professor of Psychology at UT-Austin and Principal Investigator of the project, is seeking a Research Engineering/Scientist Associate III to advance the research and training mission of the laboratory, while advancing the pers training and development with support from the PI. The primary research in the lab focuses on understanding the cognitive and neural bases of auditory processing, especially as it relates to speech, among human participants. This position is a fixed-term position dependent on external research funding. It is currently expected to last up to three years from date of hire.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of Professor Holt, the candidate will work on federally funded research to uncover the basis of listening behavior. Current projects focus on learning, selective attention, natural communication, and psychophysics. Laboratory studies include collecting multimodal behavioral and electroencephalography data, eyetracking, computational modeling, and analyzing existing data. The candidate will report directly to Professor Holt and will work closely with her to coordinate day-to-day operations to reach research goals. An approximate estimate of responsibilities, as follows:

  • Project management including personnel supervision, assisting with laboratory management and day-to-day operations that include collaborative sites.
  • Study design, data collection, ongoing evaluation of research progress.
  • Data analysis, coding, development of research pipelines and data-centric procedures.
  • Communication of research through manuscript/grant writing and oral presentation.
  • Continued learning and development of skills that will support the laboratory operation.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree in neuroscience, psychology, engineering, or related and two years' experience.
  • Strong statistical and programming skills (e.g., Matlab, Python, R); experience with coding, data analysis, or computational modeling.
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a scientific team, and to play a role in mentoring more junior laboratory members.
  • Fluency in speaking and writing in English.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States, as documented by the federal Employment Eligibility Verification I-9 form no later than the third day of employment. 

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD in neuroscience, psychology, engineering, or related
  • One or more years of expertise in auditory cognitive (neuro)science or related field is highly desirable
  • Experience with electroencephalography (EEG) and/or intracranial EEG
  • Strong initiative in consistently and creatively meeting project goals; curiosity and a willingness to learn new skills independently; accuracy and attention to detail and high levels of organization 

Salary Range

$65,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

The position will involve working in standard office environment, with the potential for repetitive use of keyboard at a workstation.
