The Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Team is dedicated to advancing cardiovascular patient care, improving the efficiency of healthcare delivery, and conducting research on an unprecedented scale. With extensive data resources, including the UHN Digital Health Platform, the PMCC AI Team is at the forefront of the AI revolution. The PMCC AI Team has developed large language models, now in use worldwide, that enhance medical imaging physicians' ability to segment and interpret any medical image, and provide researchers with the capacity to predict how changes in messenger RNA will affect cell behavior. Our approach is to bring together AI scientists, data engineers, and clinicians together as equal partners who collaborate on cutting-edge challenges using AI-enabled approaches.

The PMCC is utilizing AI algorithms developed by the PMCC AI Team to enhance the care of patients with heart failure, aortic aneurysms, narrowed neck arteries that can lead to stroke, and enlarged hearts, leveraging cutting-edge digital technology.

Currently, the PMCC AI Team includes a Chief AI scientist (Dr. Bo Wang),   Executive Lead (Dr. Barry Rubin), Clinical lead,  3 AI Scientists, a senior bioinformatician and junior bioinformatician, Machine Learning Engineer, software developer, and an administrative assistant, alongside a group of undergraduate and postgraduate computer science students. The team is growing, with plans to hire 2 more AI scientists and more students in the next year. The PMCC AI team has completed or is engaged in 150 projects led by 31 principal investigators from 17 different areas across the PMCC and across UHN.  Our vision is to grow the PMCC AI Team and expand the responsible use of AI to improve patient care, drive research, and maximize the efficiency of our clinical enterprise.

The PMCC AI Team Project Manager is a key member of the team. The incumbent will bring considerable expertise in project oversight and operational management. The Project Manager will oversee a multimillion-dollar budget, supporting a large team through end-to-end financial and data management and its associated reporting.

The PMCC AI Team Project Manager will:

  • Directly support the delivery of scientific and operational projects, working in close collaboration with the PMCC AI Scientists and Bioinformaticians, and providing operational support to advance research initiatives.
  • Oversee and report on PMCC AI Team finances, executing financial disbursements and procurement.
  • Support day-to-day operational activities, working collaboratively with PMCC AI Team members.
  • Report to both the Executive Lead and the Chief AI Scientist of the PMCC AI Team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • 1.01   Monitors and reports on the progress of all PMCC AI research projects, by developing, maintaining, and refining project plans and schedules, tracking progress against timelines, coordinating tasks across team members, and monitoring if deliverables are being met.
  • 1.02   Provides support to the PMCC AI Team Clinical Lead in developing and maintaining relationships with clinical partners and operational stakeholders within and across institutions, to facilitate project logistics and ensure seamless communication.
  • 1.03 Assists the AI Scientists and Bioinformaticians who will lead AI projects on the PMCC AI Team by coordinating resources, managing data workflows, and ensuring access to all necessary tools and infrastructure.
  • 1.04 Coordinates the logistical implementation of translational research initiatives - scheduling meetings, preparing necessary documentation, and assisting with compliance requirements, with support from a PMCC AI Team administrative assistant.
  • 1.05   Prepares and distributes key operational documents, including internal progress reports, budget updates, procurement forms, meeting agendas and minutes, and other routine correspondence.
  • 1.06   Prepares and monitors project budgets and expenses, including processing invoices, setting up financial reimbursements, tracking spending against forecasts, and flagging variances.
  • 1.07   Acts as a liaison between project team members, clinical contacts, and administrative departments to resolve logistical or operational issues.
  • 1.08   Coordinates and maintains implementation plans focused on operational execution, such as ordering supplies, arranging access to data and storage resources, and supporting the onboarding of project personnel.
  • 1.09   Facilitates routine collaboration among multi-disciplinary PMCC AI Team members and supports cross-site coordination to keep all contributors aligned and informed.
  • 1.10   Provides logistical and administrative support for sub-committees and working groups, including organizing meetings and maintaining records of decisions.
  • 1.11   Liaises with sponsors and funders, primarily to support administrative requirements, such as submitting progress reports, completing forms, arranging routine audits, or coordinating visits.
  • 1.12   Reviews the operational progress of project activities and prepares updates to inform PMCC AI Scientists and Bioinformaticians of any delays, risks, or issues requiring attention.
  • 1.13   Oversees information flow within the team by maintaining shared drives, project management platforms, and document repositories to ensure easy access to up-to-date materials.
  • 1.14   Develops and maintains reporting infrastructure for operational metrics (e.g., project status dashboards, financial tracking spreadsheets, compliance checklists).
  • 1.15   Assists in tracking and summarizing operational outcomes to inform discussions related to process improvements and efficiency of day-to-day activities.
  • 1.16   Maintains familiarity with the UHN research structure, institutional processes, and operational policies to navigate approvals, procurement, and other administrative requirements.
  • 1.17   Supports the team in nurturing collaborative relationships with academic and research partners through timely operational follow-up, preparation of necessary materials, and responsive communication.
  • 1.18   Support PMCC AI Scientists and Bioinformaticians on all aspects of grant writing and submissions to the UHN Research Ethics Board (i.e., identifying grant opportunities, budget preparation, submission, and adherence to submission timelines).
  • 1.19   Support all research-based activities, including drafting data sharing agreements.

 Planning 

  • 2.01   Prepares appropriate business plan documents in support of short- and long-term planning initiatives.
  • 2.02  Develops staff utilization plans to ensure an adequate level/mix of human resources to execute plans and achieve the required outcomes.
  • 2.03  Works with the PMCC AI Team’s Chief AI Scientist and Clinical Lead to schedule, attend, and collate information from key stakeholder meetings.
  •  Unit/department financial resources.
  • 3.01   Develops the PMCC AI Team's annual operating budget of >$2,500,000 for the utilization of resources.
  • 3.02  Analyzes financial/statistical reports regularly; monitors, analyzes and reconciles variances from approved plan; reviews remedial action required to attain budgeted targets with relevant AI Scientists and Bioinformaticians, with escalation to the PMCC AI Team Chief AI Scientist and Executive Lead, as required.
  • 3.03  Prepares and presents financial reports, as required.
  • 3.04   Coordinates and tracks program expenditures such as education, communication, technology, infrastructure acquisition, and human resources.
  • 3.05  Works with the Chief AI Scientist and Executive Director of the PMCC AI Team, and the Lead for the PMCC Campaign to develop multi-institutional research program budgets.
  • 3.06  Works with Research Financial Services to prepare and submit reports to sponsors (e.g., granting agencies).
  • 3.07   Coordinates engagement with the PMCC Digital Health Platform, PMCC Clinical Trials Unit, and PMCC Biobank on specific projects, as required.

Qualifications

  Experience.

  1. Two years in a program management/development role is required.
  2. Two years of experience supervising and mentoring staff in a research environment is required.
  3. Demonstrated experience and ability to work with a highly collaborative team of AI Scientists, Machine Learning Scientists, Data Engineers, Clinicians, and Researchers. Experience with outcome analysis is strongly preferred.
  4. Experience with the processes involved in conducting cutting-edge research, especially in health data science, biomedical AI, or academic medical research settings.

  Education.

  1. A Master's Degree in Health Administration, Science, or equivalent qualification is preferred.
  2. A Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent with relevant years of experience will also be considered.
  3. Working knowledge of AI is desired but not mandatory.
