Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Business Data Analyst at UL Standards & Engagement. This is a hybrid opportunity based in our Evanston, IL OR Durham, NC office. 

The Business Data Analyst will support technology enabled services and initiatives to advance the mission of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) to make the world safer, more secure, and sustainable. The Business Data Analyst will contribute to data governance, automation of data workflows and continuous improvement of reporting tools, and user experience optimization. Leveraging statistical and technical knowledge, the Business Data Analyst will identify trends, and develop recommendations that support data-driven decisions and strategic priorities.

What you’ll learn and achieve: 

As the Business Data Analyst, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you: 

  • Provide functional and operational support of technology software and systems. Drive continuous improvement of technology solutions and identify opportunities to meet evolving stakeholder needs and ULSE strategic objectives. 

  • Develop and maintain dashboards and reports by integrating data from multiple sources to convey complex information clearly, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with organizational goals. 

  • Document data models in the Data Catalog with detailed entity relationships, data flows, and metadata definitions to support data governance, analytics, and cross-functional understanding across teams. 

  • Continuously monitor, clean, and validate data to maintain high standards of data quality and completeness, proactively identifying and resolving anomalies or gaps in datasets. 

  • Conduct in-depth data analyses using traditional and advanced statistical methods to identify trends, assess program effectiveness, and deliver meaningful, data-driven insights for decision-making. 

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders. Collaborate with internal teams to understand reporting needs, design and deliver actionable insights, assist with developing automated ETL solutions, and transform complex data into clear, creative visualizations (graphs, tables, charts). 

  • Partner with vendors and service providers, ensure effective communication, service delivery and contract compliance. 

  • Support end-to-end projects, execute activities across the project lifecycle, and ensure timely and high-quality deliverables. 

  • Apply end-to-end solutions and implement proactive strategies to address complex, undefined, and ambiguous challenges. 

  • Collaborate within the team to ensure team-level goal achievement and enable successful adoption and integration of technology solutions. 

  • Support and facilitate internal and external meetings. Prepare meeting agendas, presentations, and other deliverables. 

  • Maintain continued awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies and best practices to continually improve performance and effectiveness of technology solutions. 

  • Independently execute tasks that range in complexity and scope. 

  • Perform other duties as directed.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree. Advanced degrees are preferred. 

  • Minimum 3 years of related work experience. 

  • Strong understanding of data modeling concepts and integration with proficiency in Microsoft Power BI, including DAX functions, Power Query, creating interactive dashboards, reports and visualizations. 

  • Experience automating ETL processes across multiple data sources. 

  • Experience with statistical programming languages such as Python, R or similar, is a plus.
