In summary, the AI Software Engineer plays a critical role in bringing AI to life, combining strong software development skills with a deep understanding of machine learning and data science to build, deploy, and maintain intelligent systems that solve real-business problems. We need a self-directed Software Engineer who loves animals, data exploration, and OpenAI-powered tooling. You’ll own projects end-to-end: generating ideas, prototyping quickly, and iterating until something sticks

Knowledge of:

Statistical analysis, data manipulation, and database querying

Ability to (required skills):

  • Programming experience and strong knowledge of various programming languages is essential (i.e., Python, Java & Apache Spark & Python3)
  • Database Modelling, Data Warehousing and Data Processing skills
  • Ability to identify business problems, develop analytical approaches and develop solutions
  • Strong communication skills to be able to explain complex technical problems to technical and non-technical audiences

Education

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field, Master’s preferred

Experience:

  • Experience with creatively applying OpenAI APIs
  • Data cleaning experience
  • Track record of driving projects end-to-end with loose specs, high ambiguity, and tight feedback loops.
  • Demonstrated passion for animals—volunteering, pet ownership, or prior veterinary exposure.
  • Ability to build quick front-end prototypes (Streamlit, Flask, or basic React).
  • Collaborative to work with clinicians and incorporate feedback
  • Comfort with being a solo engineer in an environment of highly capable domain experts.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Explore AMC’s 110-year dataset: understand, clean, and transform text, image, and structured clinical data.
  2. Discover use-cases and educate/collaborate with practitioners: talk to clinicians to understand their workflows and brainstorm how modern AI could help accelerate their work and evaluate how well AI tools are working for them.
  3. Prompt engineer and fine-tune LLMs using OpenAI’s APIs—including fine-tuning, embeddings, and reinforcement fine-tuning as well as creating appropriate evals—to create models which are great for our use-cases.
  4. Build lightweight clinician interfaces (Streamlit, basic React dashboards, etc.) so vets can test, use, and provide feedback on your tools. You are of course welcome to productionize any tool that takes off!
  5. Run rapid experiments: articulate hypotheses, train or tune models, measure performance, and iterate.

Pay Range$80,000—$105,000 USD
