Job Description

AbbVie Neuroscience is expanding its Discovery (The Advanced Cell Technologies, Screening and Sequencing) team in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which will work closely with the Migraine team as well as other Neuroscience pillars. This position in ACTS is focused on combining computational and experimental approaches to identify and validate new targets for the treatment of neurological diseases.

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist largely focused on using datasets derived from disease tissue to address these needs. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in developing and implementing cutting-edge computational approaches to improve our understanding of migraine and neurologic disease pathophysiology, the biology underlying drug non-response, and identify novel targets. Specifically, this role will involve integrating multi-omics data, building gene regulatory network models, and leveraging machine learning techniques.

The person will work in a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional team analyzing multi-omics datasets to derive insights into migraine and other neurological diseases, and identify novel therapeutic targets specific to patient cohorts. In addition, the candidate will contribute to presentations at scientific conferences, publications of translational findings in peer reviewed journals, new drug applications, and regulatory filings. If you are passionate about translating complex biological data into actionable insights and contributing to the development of medicines for debilitating diseases, we encourage you to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Multi-Omics Integration:
    • Integrate diverse omics data (e.g., gene expression, proteomics, genomics) to infer shared regulatory networks of migraine and pain.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify potential drug targets and optimize therapeutic strategies.
  • Machine Learning Model Use and/or Development:
    • Utilize and/or develop machine learning methods to assess target prioritization.
    • Utilize internal omics data to predict drug responses and optimize treatment outcomes, and perform perturbation analysis
  • Scientific Communication:
    • Interpret findings and effectively communicate scientific data, concepts, and recommendations to internal stakeholders.
    • Participate in feature design, code reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Single Cell Analysis Strategies:
    • Establish and develop novel analysis strategies for single-cell RNA-seq, and other OMICS data.
    • Leverage single-cell data to identify context-specific regulatory networks associated with disease targets and biomarkers.
  • External Collaborations:
    • Provide expertise and technical consultation for external collaborations and partnerships with academia and industry.
    • Contribute to collaborative projects that address critical gaps in drug response prediction.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically, 10 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no experience necessary.
  • PhD or MS degree in bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, computer science, computational biology, genomics, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in relevant research or industry roles is required for applicants with master's degree.
  • Proficiency in statistical and programming languages (e.g., R, Python).
  • Hands-on experience with multi-omics data integration strategies, and/or electronic health records data.
  • Experience with cloud computing environments.
  • Experience in functional interpretation of -omics data (e.g., RNA-seq, proteomics, genomics) and pathway enrichment.
  • Strong knowledge of machine learning techniques (classification, clustering, auto-encoders, reinforcement learning, transfer learning).
  • Exposure to in vitro laboratory techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Publications and Contributions: A track record of publications or contributions in relevant scientific journals or conferences.
  • Neuroscience Knowledge: Understanding of molecular and cell biology, neuroscience, and migraine biology.
  • Proficiency in in vitro laboratory techniques, such as cell culture, molecular biology techniques, assay development.
  • Collaborative and Dynamic Work Style: Ability to thrive in a multiple-tasked, fast-paced, highly collaborative, and dynamic work environment.
  • Effective Communication Skills: A proactive scientist with outstanding presentation and communication skills that foster collaboration and teamwork.
