E Ink provides the exciting and enabling “electronic paper” display technology used by eReaders throughout the world to provide a low-power, paper-like display.
We are seeking an experienced and visionary Materials Informatics Platform Architect to lead the development of our next-generation data platform supporting materials research, formulation, and manufacturing. This is a foundational role that will drive the architecture and long-term strategy of a unified data lake and feature store that integrates research, development, simulation, and production data to enable machine learning and advanced analytics across our R&D and operations.
You will partner closely with materials scientists, data scientists, ML engineers, and product stakeholders to unify siloed datasets, define robust data schemas, enforce data quality and governance, and ensure that derived features are traceable, reusable, and production-grade.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and own the FPL Materials Data Lake: Define and implement a scalable and extensible data architecture that integrates lab, simulation, and factory data across time, scale, and systems
- Identify business requirements and create designs: Work with stakeholders to understand the needs of materials scientists, researchers, and engineers, translating those needs into functional and technical specifications for the platform
- Data Lineage & Quality: Implement robust lineage tracking and data validation pipelines to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and trustworthiness of datasets
- Feature Store Engineering: Build and manage a centralized feature store optimized for training, testing, and deploying ML models for R&D and factory optimization use cases
- Tooling & Automation: Collaborate with platform engineers to build self-serve tooling for ingestion, transformation, and feature computation that empower all users
- Evaluate and select technologies and products: Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry best practices in materials informatics, making informed decisions on the tools and technologies to incorporate into the platform
Qualifications:
- A Ph.D, or Master's degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Materials Physics, Computer Science, or a related field focusing on high-performance computing and data-driven research
- 5+ years of experience in data platform or data architecture roles, ideally within scientific computing, manufacturing, or life sciences
- Expertise in modern data lakehouse technologies (e.g., Delta Lake, Iceberg, Parquet, Apache Arrow)
- Strong fluency with Python, SQL, and distributed data processing (e.g., Spark, dbt, Prefect/Airflow)
- Experience designing data models for complex, heterogeneous scientific data
- Familiarity with feature engineering and ML pipelines
- Demonstrated ability to balance strategic vision with tactical implementation
- Excellent communication skills and stakeholder alignment experience
Benefits:
- Competitive total compensation package
- Medical, dental and vision on 1st day
- Company 401K match
- 20 PTO days
