The team consists of researchers who have made significant contributions to personalization and user intent understanding. The team focuses on developing AI-powered personalization, such as personalized AI mode and Gemini App, and improving Gemini models through developing evaluation and post-training tasks on personalization. Key research areas include personalization with complex user data, understanding open-ended questions, and enhancing model alignment through reinforcement learning.

About us

Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.

The role

Research Scientists at Google DeepMind lead our efforts in developing novel algorithmic architecture towards the end goal of solving and building Artificial General Intelligence.

As part of the team, you will apply this mission to the critical challenge of AI personalization, such as:

Key responsibilities

  • Data: Designing new data creation strategies to teach models personalization. This involves generating high-quality synthetic examples of user context, and building scalable pipelines to curate and augment training sets.
  • Models: Improving quality of models for personalization and understanding user intent. This includes research to leverage complex user context (such as long context and user instructions), better techniques for personalized response generation, and improving alignment with individual user preferences.
  • Evals: Better evaluation methods (human, auto raters) to measure the quality and effectiveness of personalization and open-ended questions.

About you

In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in Computer Science, or Machine Learning related field.
  • Experience working with LLMs.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: personalization, recommender systems, user modeling, retrieval augmented generation, long context modeling, or natural language understanding.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • A strong record of publications in top-tier machine-learning related conferences
  • Expertise in reinforcement learning
  • A real passion for AI!

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $141,000 - $202,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
