JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is seeking applicants for the part-time job of Graduate Student Engineer – LLM-Powered RAG System Development.
Job Description :
The Student Engineer will work under the guidance of Penn State’s Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) and Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) to design, develop, and deploy a prototype web-based application powered by a large language model (LLM) with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). The system will support natural language access to the Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s (CTSI) internal documentation and support resources. The position involves full-stack prototype development, local deployment within a secure network, and facilitation of user testing and feedback collection. The goal is to improve user access to institutional knowledge and reduce administrative load through responsible AI integration.
Requirements, qualifications, and/or competencies:
- Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS)
- Strong familiarity with LLMs and RAG architectures
- Understanding of document indexing and vector databases (e.g., FAISS, ChromaDB)
- Experience with web development frameworks (e.g., Flask, React)
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with technical mentors
- Awareness of data security, compliance, and internal IT infrastructure practices is a plus
Compensation: $30 / hour
Start Date: ASAP
End Date: August 23, 2025
Scheduled Weekly Hours : 12 - 20
