SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Infrastructure Maintenance & Construction Services (IMCS) Operations Support Department develops the strategy and implements business processes and systems solutions collaboratively across IMCS to promote best practices in infrastructure asset management. Within IMCS Operations Support, the Data Analytics team collaborates with IMCS leadership and Engineering Services to provide data analytics that support decision-making for infrastructure asset management.
The Sr Data Analyst at Amtrak supports the company's asset management strategy through data analytics. This position focuses on gathering, cleaning, analyzing, and interpreting data to identify patterns, trends, and insights that support implementation of asset management best practices and guide decision-making for infrastructure. The Sr Data Analyst uses asset data captured through Amtrak’s Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) ecosystem to develop analytics, reporting, and visualizations that help IMCS leadership understand past performance of infrastructure assets, uncover areas for improvement, and optimize data-driven strategies. The Sr Data Analyst’s work contributes to allowing IMCS to proactively plan infrastructure maintenance activities—reducing asset downtime, extending equipment life, and optimizing system performance—that reduce operational costs. The Sr Data Analyst collaborates with other members of the Data Analytics team and works closely with IMCS and Engineering Services management to ensure data collection is aligned with operational needs, ultimately converting raw data into actionable knowledge that supports Amtrak's mission of efficient and effective asset management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Collect and integrate asset performance and maintenance data (structured and unstructured) from sources across Amtrak’s infrastructure asset management ecosystem.
- Work with all levels of IMCS and engineering management to align data collection with asset management needs and identify new data points to enhance data analytics and enable predictive analytics models.
- Prepare data for analytics by cleaning, correcting, and transforming it.
- Analyze data using statistical tools and techniques to explore, identify patterns, and uncover relationships.
- Support root cause analysis, evaluate asset and maintenance data for trends, and prepare proactive maintenance/asset replacement recommendations according to ISO 55000, PAS 55, or other Asset Management standards.
- Interpret the results of data analysis, drawing conclusions, and identifying key insights that enable informed, data-driven decisions about railroad infrastructure.
- Gather requirements and design appropriate reports and visualizations to support user strategic decision-making by end users.
- Communicate findings to stakeholders through reports, visualizations, and presentations that support maintenance and asset repair/replacement decisions.
- Automate calculations and analysis for asset assessment reporting and visualizations.
- Present data clearly and concisely, making it accessible to non-technical personnel and suitable for various audiences, i.e., field technicians will need more granularity than executive management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, or the equivalent combination of education, training and/or work experience.
- Experience performing data analytics work that supports enterprise asset management, preferably for the railroad or a related industry.
- Experience manipulating and analyzing data to develop analytics for asset management utilizing advanced Structured Query Language (SQL) patterns, Python-Statistical Programming, and Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to apply critical thinking skills to creation of data visualizations and reports using a variety of presentation tools, including Tableau.
- Ability to navigate new data domains quickly, identify and understand underlying business problems, and apply appropriate statistical models.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of technological experience, including field staff with no prior experience using computers and mobile systems.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong organizational and collaborative skills.
- Working knowledge of asset, work and maintenance management, best practices and processes.
- Ability to build rapport within all levels of the organization and to communicate effectively with leadership.
- Working knowledge of database and data warehouse design.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 3 years performing data analytics work that supports enterprise asset management, preferably for the railroad or a related industry.
- Understanding of railroad infrastructure asset management and use of data analytics for asset management decision making.
- Working knowledge of ISO 55000, PAS 55, or other Asset Management standards.
- Working knowledge of geographic information systems.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Office and field work environment.
- Travel up to 20%.
- Amtrak runs a 24/7 operation with around-the-clock work shifts. Meeting attendance may be required outside of normal business hours to gather requirements from users working different shifts.
- Travel to other Amtrak office and right-of-way sites that are not accessible by train travel will.
COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The salary/hourly range is $78,600-$101,844, Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
