Sony AI is looking for a talented Robotics Intern to join our Zurich-based team for a 6-month internship (early start dates preferred).

Roles and Responsibilities:  

The intern will work in a diverse team supporting research in robotics, AI and perception by enhancing reactivity and compliance of robot motions in control.   The role focuses on motion planning for high-speed robots operating in complex and nonlinear configuration space. The primary objective is to enable safe and robust real-time control, ensuring that policies learned in simulation can be effectively transferred and deployed on real hardware.

  • Develop and test learning-based motion planning algorithms for nonlinear robotic systems.
  • Prototype and experiment with new learning-based planning strategies in simulation and real-world settings.
  • Evaluate and benchmark performance against state-of-the-art planning approaches.
  • Integrate trained policies into the team’s robotic platform and control pipeline.
  • Contribute to the team’s codebase and maintain clear, well-structured documentation.

Required Qualifications and Skills:  

  • Creative problem solver, to be able to think on their feet and come up with unique solutions based on an in-depth state-of-art literature review.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or C++, with hands-on experience in ROS, PyTorch, or similar frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of robotics fundamentals, including kinematics, dynamics, and control.
  • Experience with learning techniques, especially reinforcement learning or imitation learning.
  • Experience with motion planning algorithms and trajectory optimization methods.
  • Ability to work with simulation environments (e.g., PyBullet, Isaac Sim, or Mujoco) for testing and validation.
  • Good software engineering practices, including version control (e.g., Git) and clean, modular code design.
