Your Impact

Hearst Magazines is looking for a skilled and passionate Data Scientist to join our innovative Data & AI team. In this role, you will be a key contributor to the full lifecycle of data science projects that directly influence the direction of our products and strategies. You will work with massive and rich datasets to build machine learning models and generate critical insights that enhance user engagement, optimize content strategy, and create value for our advertising partners. This is a hands-on role for a problem-solver who is excited to tackle complex challenges and make a tangible impact on the future of media.

What You'll Do:

  • End-to-End Model Development: Independently own and execute data science projects from conception to deployment. This includes data gathering and cleaning, feature engineering, model selection, training, validation, and implementation into our production environment.
  • Applied Machine Learning: Develop and implement a range of machine learning models to solve business problems such as content recommendation, audience segmentation, user churn prediction, and programmatic advertising optimization.
  • In-Depth Analysis: Go beyond surface-level metrics to conduct deep-dive analyses, translating complex datasets into actionable insights and strategic recommendations for our editorial, product, and commercial teams.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with data engineers to build robust data pipelines and partner with product managers and other stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver effective data-driven solutions.
  • Effective Communication: Clearly and effectively communicate your findings, methodologies, and the "so what" of your analysis to both technical and non-technical audiences through reports and presentations.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to improve existing models and processes, and stay current with the latest techniques and technologies in the field of data science.

Who You Are:

  • Experience: 3+ years of hands-on professional experience in a data science or machine learning role.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Strong proficiency in Python for data science (including libraries like Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn) and SQL.
    • Solid understanding and practical experience with a variety of machine learning algorithms (e.g., logistic regression, random forests, gradient boosting, clustering, NLP techniques).
    • Experience with ML frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch is a strong plus.
    • Familiarity with big data technologies (e.g., Spark, BigQuery) and cloud platforms (GCP, AWS).
  • Problem-Solving Skills: A proven ability to break down complex, ambiguous problems into manageable and solvable components.
  • Business Acumen: The ability to connect data science work to real-world business impact and understand key performance indicators.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a track record of working effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or a related discipline.

Working at Hearst Magazines:

  • Work with the Best: Collaborate with top-tier professionals across media, advertising, tech, fashion, lifestyle, and publishing, shaping the future of these dynamic industries.
  • Grow Your Skills: Unlock your potential with access to innovative training programs, immersive workshops, and exclusive industry events.
  • Work-Life Harmony: Enjoy the flexibility of hybrid work, empowering you to balance professional success with personal priorities.
  • Foster Connection & Belonging: Join our Employee Resource Groups and help create a welcoming workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered.
  • Wellness First: Prioritize your well-being with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance from Day 1.
  • Plan for Your Financial Future: Enjoy competitive financial perks, including a 401(k) plan with a generous company match.

The base salary for this role is between $133,000 - $150,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
