Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Our Enterprise Commercial Management department is looking for a Senior Data Analyst to join the team. This individual will provide advice and analytical insight to the development of performance dashboards, reports and processes that effectively address internal and external stakeholder reporting requirements for the Enterprise Commercial Management portfolio.

What will I be doing?

  • Create regular and ad hoc reports from concept to completion and use insight to identify the best format and data interpretation to present and communicate to internal and external stakeholders (e.g., Enterprise Commercial Management, Metrolinx Senior Management, MTO and IO, etc.) by:
    • Coordinating information collection and consolidation from the various business systems and the project teams,
    • Analyzing information downloaded from the various systems and submitted by the project teams.
  • Conduct preliminary analysis and quality assurance of internal and external data, assess the validity of the data, and produce Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) to ensure a manageable ETL infrastructure for the data and analytics solutions.
  • Identify data needs to develop high-value, actionable reporting and develop processes for identifying, storing, and accessing relevant data essential to the development and deployment of analytical reports / dashboards.
  • Develop and test Data Analytics prototypes, proof of concepts, pilots and production builds for business improvement plans and business cases that aim to understand and improve on the performance and success metrics through the analysis, processing and reporting of data that is collected through business processes and systems.
  • Design, build and deploy Business Intelligence (BI) components of solutions using visualization platforms such as Power BI for analytical and management review within Enterprise Commercial Management team.
  • Work with Enterprise Commercial Management teams and other Metrolinx areas (e.g., CPG Reporting, Metrolinx Finance, and Strategy & Centers of Excellence) to identify opportunities for improvement in reporting, tools, or techniques to improve overall quality of reporting and data analytics.
  • Design, build, test and deploy data and analytics reports/dashboards using Microsoft Power BI.
  • Track and analyze data to identify project and program commercial risks and trends against established KPIs and regularly report results.
  • Remain current and informed of Enterprise Commercial Management issues and participate in the review and evaluation of policies, procedures and methodologies for the collection, analysis, reporting and quality assurance of project- and program-based commercial reports.
  • Build strong relationships with divisional reporting teams and commercial management teams within Metrolinx to maintain knowledge of issues affecting projects and upcoming initiatives to facilitate cooperation in the provision of data for report preparation.
  • Consult with Enterprise Commercial functions and divisional commercial teams to identify opportunities to develop innovative data collection and reporting processes.
  • Engage with members of the commercial team to report on progress of commercial issues and commercial KPIs.
  • Engage with members of the Business Systems team and IT to develop and improve commercial reports from the Contract Management Systems.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Completion of a degree in Engineering, Commercial or Analytics, or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Demonstrated related work experience.
  • Data collection/management techniques and the development/interpretation of data to determine requirements, retrieve, analyze and deliver insights and recommendations.
  • Solid understanding of business intelligence tools and data analytics with demonstrated experience working on BI projects.
  • Experience in Microsoft Power BI tools creating data-rich dashboards, implementing row-level security, Power Query and DAX. 
  • Experience in Power Automate, Power Apps, and Dataverse is an asset.
  • Data quality assurance processes, methodology and tools, quality assurance testing and implementation methods and practices to ensure the integrity of data and to identify data inefficiencies.
  • Creativity to determine format of reports and to translate a range of diverse data/information into meaningful reports that support internal and external requirements.
  • Evaluating skills to conceptualize approaches to meeting reporting requirements and to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of data and to recommend enhancements to meet reporting needs and priorities.
  • Analytical skills to analyze data, conduct complex analysis, explain analytic methodology and report accurate results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to draft reports, analyze information and present financial information to various audiences. 
  • Computer system file structures and operating systems and computer software (in particular, proficiency in Excel as advanced user, Word, Power BI) to select the most appropriate software to suit data reporting requirements.
