Job Description SummaryGE HealthCare is seeking a Cognitive Engineer to help design and optimize medical technologies that support clinicians and improve patient outcomes. You will apply cognitive science and human factors principles to ensure our imaging systems, monitoring devices, and digital health platforms are intuitive, safe, and effective in real-world clinical environments.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Conduct cognitive task analyses with radiologists, technologists, and clinicians to understand workflows, pain points, and decision-making.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design user interfaces for imaging systems, patient monitors, and digital health tools.
  • Lead usability evaluations and human-in-the-loop simulations to validate design decisions.
  • Translate cognitive insights into actionable design requirements and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Support regulatory submissions by documenting human factors engineering processes in compliance with FDA, NMPA, and IEC 62366-1 standards.
  • Contribute to the development of AI-enabled decision-support tools that align with clinical reasoning processes.
  • Collaborate with software developers, UX designers, and clinical stakeholders to develop and refine prototypes.
  • Apply cognitive psychology and human factors principles to reduce errors and improve efficiency in clinical environments.
  • Develop metrics for design success. Monitor, measure and adjust designs accordingly in conjunction with Product Managers and Engineering.
  • Champion a people-centered design approach, leveraging insights from design and market research/feedback to inform design decisions.
  • Analyze user interactions and behavioral data to optimize system usability and performance.
  • Design and conduct experiments to test cognitive load, attention, perception, and decision quality in system use.
  • Iterate on cognitive models and design frameworks based on testing outcomes and user feedback.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Psychology, or a related field with at least 10 years of applied experience.
  • Experience applying cognitive engineering or human factors in healthcare or medical device environments.
  • Familiarity with usability testing methods, workflow analysis, and human-centered design.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex cognitive insights into actionable design recommendations.
  • Able to work in fast paced environment. Must possess exceptional team skills.

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience with medical device interfaces.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and standards (e.g., FDA, AAMI, NMPA, IEC 62366-1).
  • Familiarity with prototyping tools (e.g., Axure, Figma) and data analysis software (e.g., R, Python).
  • Exposure to neuroscience methods (EEG, eye-tracking) or biofeedback systems.
  • Experience designing for high-stakes environments (aviation, healthcare, defense, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of machine learning concepts, model interpretability, and human-AI interaction paradigms.
  • Experience designing for explainability and trust in AI/ML systems.

For U.S. based positions only, the pay range for this position is $131,200.00-$196,800.00 Annual. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the pay range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including skills, qualifications, experience and location. In addition, this position may also be eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
