At Medtronic you can begin a life-long career of exploration and innovation, while helping champion healthcare access and equity for all. You’ll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation in a more connected, compassionate world.

A Day in the Life

This role exists within Medtronic’s enterprise level AI Center of Excellence. As part of a team which specializes in both data-driven (AI/ML) and mechanistic (FEA/CFD/Physiology) modeling, you will be empowered to develop and implement novel modeling techniques to enable our Human Digital Twin strategy. You will apply your expertise in data-driven modeling and mechanistic modeling across various Medtronic therapies, solving challenges across the total product lifecycle.

At Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. In-person exchanges are invaluable to our work. We’re working a minimum of 4 days a week onsite as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of professional growth and cross-functional collaboration as we work together to engineer the extraordinary.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for the initiation, design and execution of practical research projects focused on advancing the use of data driven modeling (AI/ML), mechanistic modeling (mechanical, thermal, electrical, electrophysiology or fluid flow) and hybrid approaches (e.g. PINNs) across Medtronic’s products and therapies.
  • Apply state-of-the-art Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Computer Vision techniques to generate predictive models from clinical data and synthetic data.
  • Grow existing knowledge of state-of-the art principles and theories of computational modeling, with an emphasis on data-driven techniques (primary) and physics-based modeling (secondary) approaches.
  • Proactively create novel algorithms, scripting and software techniques to automate, simplify and accelerate execution of computational modeling workflows.
  • Apply proficiency in scripting (e.g. python), data manipulation (e.g. SQL, Spark), cloud computing platforms (e.g. AWS) and 3D simulation platforms (e.g. Omniverse) to develop digital twin solutions.
  • Research techniques to enable robust and fast mechanistic simulation of complex interactions between devices and anatomy, including patient specific modeling approaches requiring processing of medical imaging into 3D models.
  • Apply working knowledge of Multiphysics simulation and tissue modeling to predict medical device performance in support of device concept evaluation, failure analysis and personalized treatment scenario planning (e.g. using LSDyna).
  • Develop techniques to combine the strengths of data driven modeling (AL/ML) with physics-based modeling (FEA/CFD) and zero dimensional (lumped parameter system) models.
  • May contribute to scientific literature and conferences.
  • May participate in generation and development of patent applications.

Must Have: Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with practical development and application of AI tools e.g. Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Machine learning, Reinforcement Learning.

Nice to Have:

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related science or engineering discipline.
  • Familiarity with FEA and/or CFD methodologies and applications.
  • Expertise in High Performance Computing systems and practices.
  • Extensive background in leveraging biological or medical datasets to create predictive models, particularly for medical device innovation or personalized medicine initiatives.
  • Proficient in Python programming for scientific and engineering applications.
  • Skilled in statistical analysis tools (e.g., R) and image processing platforms (e.g., 3D Slicer).
  • Proven ability to use scripting for process automation and digital workflow development.
  • Hands-on experience developing statistical shape modeling techniques for anatomical modeling.
  • Capable of creating purely data-driven models, mechanistic models, and hybrid approaches.
  • Strong grasp of human anatomy, physiology, and pathological conditions.
  • Familiarity with medical device design and/or medical device software development processes.
  • Background in working within regulated industries.
