As a Data Scientist in R&D, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world.

Here, you will make an impact by:

• Building solutions to analyze, interpret, predict and optimize process and testing data related to materials or hardgoods development.
• Designing and implementing machine learning models to extract insights from datasets.
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams and subject matter experts to integrate data-driven solutions into materials science projects, development workflows and manufacturing processes.
• Leverage expertise to identify, develop and drive new technologies enabling new product development, providing new growth opportunities in addition to supporting existing 3M products and businesses.
• File patent applications, publish, and present at appropriate conferences.
• Collaborate with research teams in corporate research and in business labs to build capabilities and applications to solve emerging challenges.
• Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to lead customer insight-driven processes to identify new opportunities for 3M.

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who meet the following minimum requirements:

• Master’s degree or higher in data science, material science, or an engineering discipline from an accredited university.
• Proficient in programming languages like Python, JavaScript, and possibly C# or C++.
• Experienced with Python libraries such as TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, and SciPy.
• Familiar with cloud platforms and infrastructure for handling large data volumes (AWS, Azure, GitHub).
• Strong interdisciplinary communication skills; able to convey complex data insights to non-technical stakeholders.
• Substantial experience in data science or data analytics, with strong problem-solving abilities, adept at working with complex datasets, and experienced in data integration and big data methodologies.
• Skilled in creating neural networks and architectures, knowledgeable in materials science and engineering principles, with experience in developing new technology and/or products, industry applications like time series analysis of plant processes, vision systems, or robotics/automation, and knowledgeable about AI agents/bots and AI-on-Edge technologies (e.g., Nvidia CUDA).
• Fluent in English and German

Additional knowledge / nice-to-have skills / preferred qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• Ph.D. degree or post-doctoral fellowship in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Cognitive Science, Software Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline from an accredited university
• Technical leadership experience with a development team
• Training and/or experience in deep learning, machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence, statistics, informatics, transformers, diffusion models, optimization algorithms and/or applied mathematics through thesis work, or industry or national lab employment
• Demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by publications and presentations.
