Job Description:
A key enabler to THP’s strategic plan is data and analytics. The Performance and Business Intelligence portfolio, in collaboration with stakeholders across THP, will design, architect, govern and deploy high quality data and analytics, to support strategic performance insights and planning to enable THP’s mission of ‘A New Kind of Health Care for a Healthier Community’. Building upon several key achievements, this portfolio will continue to advance the development of an enterprise health data strategy and roadmap. The Performance and Business Intelligence portfolio is made up of Performance Analytics and Case Costing, the Business Performance Office and the Business Intelligence Department.
Reporting to the Director of Performance Analytics and working directly with the Chief Scientist, Institute for Better Health, to support their data needs the Population Health Lead, will be a key player in our mission to enhance population health outcomes and reduce health disparities. In addition, you will work with key leads from the Institute for Better Health to ensure alignment of recommendations and best practices of Population Health. The Institute for Better Health is a core enabler of THP’s mission and works collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders. Your primary role will involve analyzing health, social and demographic data relevant for population health, identifying trends, developing indicators and analyses. You possess a strong work ethic and a passion for advancing healthcare through developing and reporting clinical, quality and population health Key Performance Indicators (KPIs); interpreting, visualizing, and presenting findings; developing statistical models and indicators c. In addition, you will assist with the design and implementation of Population Health specific outputs (e.g., dashboards, reports), and make recommendations to Senior Leadership, community partners, hospital operations and researchers. This role will also work closely with the Mississauga Ontario Health Team and the Data Planning Table and their population health deliverables. The role will provide guidance and direction to the Senior Advisor, Population Health.
Responsibilities:
- Perform population health analysis; Conduct comprehensive analysis of population health data, including demographic information, health indicators, disease prevalence, and social determinants of health;
- Analyze, interpret, and present data, and create and maintain technical documentation;
- Utilize statistical methods and data visualization techniques using tools such as Power BI and ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Web AppBuilder to identify patterns and trends in health data, informing the development of evidence-based interventions for THP and its stakeholders;
- Develops analytic code and performs complex manipulation of large datasets, using SAS, SQL, Python, or R;
- Perform patient segmentation to better understand the needs of the population served, and evaluate effectiveness of population health initiatives and interventions
- Understanding and experience with calculating different measures of health equity
- Commit to, and actively work to remain knowledgeable and up-to-date in the assigned field;
- Oversee the collection, organization, and maintenance of population health data to ensure accuracy and reliability for analysis;
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in population health research, data analysis techniques, and healthcare policies
- Collaborate with Chief Scientist and the Mississauga Ontario Health Team on key deliverables and recommendations, support requests for grants, technical reports and other communications and publications related to research activities
- Work with IBH research leads to integrate more community and population health data sources
- Prepare clear and concise reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to various stakeholders;
- The lead will facilitate the uptake of knowledge by local decision-makers across the organization through the presentation of findings, education sessions, and one-on-one interactions as required;
- Educate various stakeholders on population health metrics
Key Qualifications:
- Completion of Master’s Degree in Epidemiology, Statistics, Public Health, Data Science or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Three (3) or more years of experience in a healthcare environment including experience preparing analyses of operational, and quality measures;
- Advanced proficiency in using quantitative, statistical, and report writing tools (Microsoft Excel, SQL, SAS, SSRS, Regression analysis, R, Python, Power BI) and various business and healthcare information applications, reporting tools/systems
- Ability to manage and manipulate large databases that include personal health information, conducting data linkage, writing analytic code and analyzing data using statistical software packages (SQL, R or SAS essential);
- Experience applying various statistical or data science techniques such as: Descriptive, Forecasting, Predictive Modelling, and Regression;
- Direct experience with analyzing different types of population health data sources including health administrative data, hospital-generated data, survey data, and Census data
- Ability to critically evaluate and synthesize relevant sources of information;
- Demonstrated effective communication and presentation of complex analyses.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision and possessing a positive team spirited attitude
- Excellent interpersonal and client relationship skills;
- Sound organizational and planning skills with the ability to multi-task with strong attention to detail within a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
- Open-minded and eager to learn
- Experience with coordinating research activities
Considered an asset
- Experience working with multiple CIHI datasets (DAD, NACRS, OMHRS, NRS, and CCRS)
- Experience working with health administrative data such as IntelliHealth
- Familiarity with Statistics Canada data holdings including Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) and the Census CCHS, and IntelliHealth, Statistics Canada
- Working experience and ability to use geographic mapping software (e.g. Maptitude, ArcGIS)
- Working knowledge of health care funding methodologies (HBAM and QBP) and health care reporting requirements (e.g. OHRS and MIS guidelines)
