The Nitty Gritty:
Big Viking Games is on the hunt for an experienced Senior Data Scientist to join our team! This position is reporting to the FP&A Manager and is available remotely in Canada, with candidates from Ontario preferred.
The Role:
As a Senior Data Scientist at Big Viking games, your primary responsibility will be to transform complex data sets into actionable insights that our team can use to enhance user engagement and satisfaction. Your insights will directly inform the development of new features, the optimization of game mechanics, and the personalization of player experiences. Working closely with the product development and user experience teams, you will ensure that our games not only meet but exceed the expectations of our player base, fostering a more engaging and enjoyable gaming environment.
Requirements
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with engineering to design and implement efficient data pipelines and ETL processes to extract, transform, and load user data from various sources into Snowflake's relational database.
- Develop and maintain dimensional data models, fact tables, and OLAP cubes to support multidimensional analysis and reporting.
- Leverage SQL and tools like Snowflake/Google Big Query to query, manipulate, and transform data for analysis and reporting purposes.
- Utilize functional programming languages (e.g. Python) for ad-hoc exploratory data analyses.
- Apply machine learning techniques (e.g., clustering, decision trees, etc.) to uncover patterns, predict user behavior, and optimize user experiences.
- Support in deploying machine learning models to production and further monitoring and maintaining them.
- Support in ensuring and maintaining data governance and privacy compliance, while robustifying data sources in terms of their quality
- Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and analysts to translate business requirements into analytical solutions and actionable insights.
- Communicate findings, insights, and recommendations effectively to cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Build interactive dashboards and reports using data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker) to monitor user behavior, spend, and usage patterns
- Deep knowledge of the freemium business model and its unique challenges, such as retaining players for extended periods and providing a sense of progression to drive monetization.
- Knowledge of game design principles, progression systems, and how they influence player motivation and retention.
- Experience analyzing and optimizing key metrics like user acquisition, retention, monetization, and lifetime value (LTV) in freemium games.
- Familiarity with virtual economies, currencies, and monetization mechanics commonly used in freemium games, such as in-app purchases (IAPs), advertising, loot boxes, social casino mechanics, and subscriptions.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze user behavior data, identifying patterns, and building predictive models to forecast user actions and spending.
- Ability to collaborate with game designers and product managers to translate data insights into actionable improvements to game economies and progression systems.
Requirements:
- Minimum Required Experience: 3 years in a relevant field. Preferred Experience: 5 years or more, demonstrating deeper proficiency and understanding in the role.
- Strong proficiency in SQL and experience working with relational databases, preferably Snowflake.
- The ability to work effectively in any functional programming language for numerical analysis purposes. Expertise in data visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Looker.
- Knowledge of data modeling, ETL processes, and data warehousing best practices.
- Understanding of data governance principles, data quality checks, and data privacy regulations.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to present complex data insights to non-technical audiences.
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS) is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with machine learning techniques and Python libraries (e.g., scikit-learn).
