Optimisation and Trading Analytical Team

The Optimisation and Trading Analytics Team (OTAT) is part of Quantitative Modelling and Analytics in the Energy Market Analytics department and is located in both Paris and London. The core purpose of the team (9 people) is the development of complex market forecasting models and asset optimisation tools to support EDF Trading proprietary activity and EDF Group portfolio optimisation. The team efforts are directed towards both the Paris based activity in the intraday electricity markets as well as other horizons (short term, long term) and other commodities traded from London. The team works in proximity with trading desks and other analyst teams in both locations.

Position purpose

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an analyst to join the Optimisation & Trading Analytical Team (OTAT).

The analyst will design and develop optimisation and trading applications with a strong impact on the business. We are looking for a motivated individual with excellent technical skills and proven experience in mathematical modelling applied to the energy sector.

Main responsibilities

  • Work in close collaboration with the Power Trading Desks and the wider Market Analyst Team to deliver best-in-class data science and/or optimisation models for power price forecasting.
  • Design, develop and support optimisation & trading algorithms and analytics tools
  • Provide analytical support and expertise on data science and/or optimisation projects undertaken by teams across EDF Trading (Trading desks, Market Analysis and Origination)
  • Engage and coordinate with internal clients to ensure effective collaboration across the organisation and to maximise the impact of projects
  • Continuously improve existing processes, tools and models to increase performance and reliability of OTAT applications

Experience and technical requirements

Essential requirements:

  • Prior experience (2 years +) in either
    • power market analysis, or
    • development of data science and/or optimisation algorithms applied to the energy sector
  • Knowledge and understanding of machine learning models and mathematical optimisation
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong programming skills (demonstrated in Python, Java or other)
  • Ability to understand the wider commercial implications of projects
  • Higher education  degree in a quantitative subject (Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, …)

Beneficial requirements:

  • Experience in an energy trading environment (trading, asset optimisation, portfolio management or risk)
  • Experience in Python, Java, SQL and noSQL databases, web technologies for front-end development
