Data Scientist 70-100% (f/m/d) The Research Group Dendrosciences uses tree rings to investigate and understand environmental impacts on tree growth and to reconstruct past environmental changes at scales ranging from minutes to millennia and from cells to ecosystems around the globe. From 1 September 2024 or the earliest availability, we offer a 1-year position as a
You will be part of a project co-funded by the Open Research Data (ORD) Program of the ETH Domain to create an easy-to-use online platform for storing and viewing wood cell data along tree-ring series. This data is valuable for understanding past climate conditions and how trees adapt to changes, making it important for plant scientists, ecologists, and climatologists. In this project, we will develop a solution using modern open-source technologies. The platform will focus on interactive features, reward systems for contributions, and transparent data review to ensure data quality and encourage participation. Your role will involve developing elegant and efficient technical solutions for a web application built with the open-source R package Shiny connected to a PostgreSQL database. This app will allow users to upload, search, and manage wood cell data in a decentralized way through the web platform. You will be part of an enthusiastic and ambitious project team that includes leading researchers in dendrochronology and experts in environmental research data management. This position is based at WSL, within the Dendrosciences group, which is renowned for its tree-ring research. You will likely also interact with experienced researchers from similar institutions worldwide.
You preferably have a Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or Environmental Science, and have proven development expertise in PostgreSQL, GitHub, and R, including R Shiny apps. You have a flair for handling big data and for programming using modern, elegant, and efficient solutions. You can successfully expand and acquire knowledge in topics relevant to the project. You have a proficient command of spoken English, can work in a structured and independent manner, possess a high level of team spirit, and have excellent communication skills.
Please send your complete application to Stefania Pe, Human Resources WSL, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered.
