The Quantitative Geneticist will play a key role in the Genetic Prediction Group at Neogen Corporation, responsible for data control, development of pipelines, and delivery of genetic results for livestock key customers. Neogen seeks a Geneticist with experience in Quantitative Genetics, Genomics, and Data Science to drive genetic improvement in our breeding program through innovative technologies. This position will develop and implement data quality control and quantitative genetic methods applied to animal breeding programs. The ideal candidate must have a strong understanding of quantitative genetics, animal breeding, SQL, UNIX/Linux, bash scripts, and other programming languages and experience in applying quantitative genetics to commercial breeding programs for different species.Core Duties and Responsibilities:
· Design, prototype, and implement genomic prediction models using the latest advances in data science with a combination of state-of-the-art analytics, diverse types of data integration, data visualization, and biological domain knowledge.
· Rapidly understand product, research, and development objectives and drive the product development process through computational breeding decisions with internal partners.
· Analyze and maintain the quality of data pipelines and work with the data quality team to resolve issues. Ensure that high standards are maintained during dataset expansion.
· Use model outputs and strong business expertise to deliver insights, recommendations, and solutions.
· Write and review robust codes and pipelines that adhere to standards and best practices already in place. Design data generation, collection, and integration efforts to enable future projects and analysis.
· Ensure that the genetic evaluations are carried out in a timely and accurate manner.
· Communicate results of genetic evaluations to customers and other stakeholders.
Qualifications:
· Masters or Ph.D. degree in Animal Breeding or Quantitative Genetics.
· A minimum of 2+ years of experience.
· Experience with national or global genetic evaluations is a plus.
· Experience implementing technologies and techniques used to make genetic improvements.
· Experience modeling genetic improvement across livestock production segments.
· Experience with SQL.
· Experience with Linux and Bash scripts.
· Experience in other programming tools, like R or Python, is a differential.
· Fluent in English, both verbal and written.
· Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are required.
· Excellent technical writing and presentation skills with the ability to communicate in an organized and concise manner.
· Ability to work both autonomously and collaborate across teams and functional areas.
· Work requires continual attention to detail and the ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
· Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems in an empowered, self-directed/managed work environment.
· Proficient in other relevant software applications; Knowledge and experience with databases, Linux, and high-performance computing preferred.
Desired Skills:
· Advanced computer programming skills in languages relevant to
phenotypic and genotypic data analyses.
· Experience working with database management systems.
· Experience with animal breeding programs.
· Experience in genetic/genomic evaluations, estimation of variance components, genotype imputation, and analyses to understand the genetic architecture of complex traits.
· Experience with developing and implementing new methods for genetic prediction and selection.
